It's probably related to the sheer amount of people involved in fandoms by now. Ten years ago, 1% of a fandom being assholes meant that there were like two or three people everyone knew to avoid. Now, for a popular show, the same 1% stands for something in the hundreds and that's enough to dominate a site like tumblr.
Doesn't matter if 99% of the people aren't assholes, the 1% can completely monopolize discussion and bully out people that try to oppose them, since they are usually connected with each other (nobody else would want to associate with them) while most other people just mind their own business, which makes them easy to pick off. If a hundred assholes signal boost each other it's easy to mistake them for the majority of the fandom, which most other people wouldn't want to go against.

Because they hate anything that's remotely associated with masculinity. The moment a guy is shown to be super tough and serious, he's "toxic". It's better to be an emotional wreck who cries all the fucking time.
(Which makes me think, I wonder if these tumblrinas had any sort of father figure or something, bc this would explain a lot)

I was hoping they would eventually grow-up and mature (I know the fan I was in the late 90s and early 00 is much different than I am now), but sadly, a chunk of the them didn't. A number of them got twisted by SJW-ism and warped their views.

None of the characters have default skins that "reflect their cultures," that's just par for the course in OW. If people are really desperate for it, there's always the alt skins.
