I always just saw the bath scene as something common in Japan, given women bathe together often and will do other things like hold hands and hug etc without it being anything other than close friendship. As someone who knows a lot of these slacktivists irl the quick and easy answer is that they want attention. They don’t actually care abt Palestine that much, they ultimately just see it as a means to garner as much social media and real world attention as they can. It was just like this during the BLM stuff too, it’s extremely rare that it has any relation to their personal life in any way (even less so than BLM in this case as it’s a world away)
I know people whose parents explicitly tell them they won’t pay for college if they go to a rally, and ofc the next day they go to one and text their parents all about it to then complain about how mad their family is at them. I think it has to do with a fake sense of bravery for “risking it all for what you believe in” but since they’ve always relied on mommy and daddy for everything they don’t really know the implications of losing everything. Their codependence makes them not really know what it’s like to have no support and be on your own, and they’re too young or coddled to really know what its like to struggle to survive. They think this is all a game, and that theyll be showered in praise for standing up to the Bad Guys and fumbling their privilege in doing so (I want to stress that in almost all these cases they come from very well-off families, so the idea of ruining their lives really doesn’t have any effect on them)
Another thing - they likely have few to no IRL friends, a crippling social media addiction (Xitter or IG where they’re showered in tragic news nonstop), and no reason to log off and live life. Slacktivism becomes a part of who they are, and thus it leads to irrational behavior as seen here since it becomes integral to them in place of anything meaningful. They think, or hope, that reality will mimic Xitter in that they’ll be cared for and welcomed by others for risking it all in such stunts. Sorry, but I have my own life to live. There are tons of other genocides and mass killings going on in the world and no one will care about those until the Current Thing tells them to.
