I'm not surprised the fans analyze every single detail about the designs for shit about gender roles. I disagree that it's some deep commentary on gender (but they are a bit sjw pandering) - Bismuth's character is a burly blacksmith type, and it's established that the gems are all female. So, she's a really butch woman. Stevonnie's a "they" because they're two people, a boy and a girl. These fans forget it's a fucking kid's cartoon, not a propaganda piece.

In all honesty, I wish it was possible to criticize a design on Tumblr without getting eaten alive. Everyone I've seen has been praising how adorable the designs of some of these characters are, but I just don't see it...

They're blinded by their "representation" It doesn't matter how it looks as long as it fits in with their checklist.

The idea of things being aesthetically presentable does not exist on Tumblr.

I'm just getting this horrible thought of this mentality slipping into public consciousness. More so considering their mentality's seeping into cartoons these days.
That aside, the designs are the literal definition of "hit and miss" (mostly the latter). The only designs I could even consider remotely passable are Pearl, Lapis, Peridot, Stevonnie and the occasional background character. The others are given either shit color palettes, shit designs or both.

Despite the body hair, I still like the first one. Although she should go get her car checked, that steering wheel was attached improperly. Last one is fine, IMO. Not too SJWish, at least at first glance. It has a nice cartoony quality to it.

Second one: Why do the arms look more like turds than usual?
Third one: How do you literally fuck up SJW art this bad? It's like it's mocking the practice, yet fails miserably in its own ways. And what the hell's wrong with their faces? Are those even faces?
Fourth one: Feels more like troll art than anything. It's sloppy, but compared to the one above it, it's not horrible.

TBH most cartoons nowadays have horrible designs imo. It's like the artists won't stop giving their main characters potato/derp faces and we're somehow supposed to find them "cute" (SU, that Star Magic show, Garden Wall, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls)...

I do rather miss the days when Cartoon Network hadn't become Tumblr Network, and the shows there had a real sense of style...
But I don't really think the designs these days are that ugly, just too samey.
