I could see this hanging in a modern art exhibit. It sells itself on ugliness and "boldness" rather than merit and dumb suckers eat it up to look cultured, or progressive in this case.

You know, this only solidifies my belief and opinion that if you're THAT dissatisfied with a series or whatever, go create your own material instead of trying to piggyback and bastardize something for a personal agenda. The change in media that these people oh so desperately want isn't going to happen through redrawing these types of characters into... those things.

If you really, truly, and earnestly believe in that sort of thing, then put up with your own original material or shut the fuck up. People like the late, great Dwayne McDuffie didn't sit around doing nothing but constantly bellyaching about the lack of black superheroes in comics up until his untimely death, he actually got out there and created 'Static Shock', much less the entire Milestone imprint, ffs. (Which.... less said about DC's treatment of it and him, the better, but that's for another thread) Grace Ellis got her ass out there and created 'Lumberjanes' instead of turning characters like Carol Danvers or Wonder Woman into ambiguously brown hambeasts. And for crying out loud, look at Rebecca Sugar.

But nah, too much work and too much effort for these idiots. They could very well be the change they want to see, but they're too lazy and ignorant to realize it. What a waste.

Really at this point it's actually nothing to do with representation, it's more just the attention it gets. Art of an original character, unless it's very well drawn, wouldn't get as many notes as some Steven Universe fanart or anything else that's currently popular. So artists latch onto what's hot amongst the tumblrinas (like undertale, overwatch, etc) and draw fanart of that. You'll easily get around 1,000 notes that way even if you're not well-known, and then you get a couple of followers.

THEN for extra bonus brownie points, they warp it so ridiculously in the name of representation, and that gets attention off people who wouldn't otherwise care because they're tards who cry and whine about this shit and write essays on how space aliens are "black-coded", and they see the evil skinny white cissie has become a black hamplanet trans with 10 skin diseases, and they think "YES THIS IS WHAT I MEAN" and they reblog.

Now the artist has thousands of followers and their art is getting a lot of notes, and their patreons got some bux trickling in. Now they can do their own original stuff - but wait, why change the formula? Drawing hideous effigies of people got them this popular, if they change now they might stir up the hive and become an "unacceptable" artist, lose all their followers and their attention and their money.

So basically it's lousy artists trapped in a loop attention-seeking in the easiest way possible. Instead of being, you know, actually talented.

Art school is pretty easy to get into. If you're willing to pay the tuition, and you know how to at least hold a pencil, then you're good to go. Your art doesn't even have to be particularly unique. It'll be interesting to see what she can draw once the Steven Universe-esque style falls out of fashion.
