Why does Tumblr have an obsession with vitiligo?

So basically their idea was to take Mercy and change everything about her that makes her who she is. She's basically a pacifist and only joined Overwatch because it would allow her to help people, that character doesn't give off that vibe at all.
 
The debate on that page is getting heavy because the author thinks Mercy's concept and design is "boring". Despite other people and myself mentioning how that isn't what Mercy is.

When I think about it and the current feminist climate on female characters, a character like Penelope Pitstop (for example) could never be done as a main character today (at least not without a lot of screeching). You have a girly, proper, pacifistic southern belle who likes the color pink and wants to look good without being vain. While she is kind and resourceful, she would (at best) be shoved to minor supporting character or a strawwoman that needs to be showing the right way of thinking.

Not to mention that the Hooded Claw, her main antagonist, is clearly gay. That's a no-no.

She looks like an edgy emo Samus Aran wannabe.
These people are too fucking stupid to realize that Mercy is a support character who HEALS. Which is why she has light, warm colors and is dressed like an angel.

Nope, to them, all healers look like either doctors or priests. Because having an angel design for your healer is boring.

The site also is in support of getting rid of "offensive jokes" and material, because it's more creative when you're not offending people. Yes, offensiveness can be a crutch for hacks, but you also get cool stuff like Richard Pryor and Married with Children that pushed boundaries and felt relatable. Oddly, the site is a fan of the dirty webcomic, Oglaf.

Of course it's vitiligo. It's always vitiligo. What were you expecting? AIDS? santa claus? the tooth fairy?

Of course replacing sunglasses with Vitiligo is the only reasonable thing to assume in this current situation.
EDIT: beaten to the punch, although it's still really baffling that the artist decided to replace sunglasses with eyeball vitiligo.
