This sort of thing happens with nearly every kind of shade of brown japanese character that gets kinda popular, even if people get tired to explain that artists usually draw women and men that attend swimming activities in highschool as naturally tanned (or they are from Okinawa).

But no, they definetly have to be black because they say so. Same happened some time ago with Nagatoro and people went on a chimpout about it.

Autistic art nitpicking here but Frye's blood is blue? Why are her ears red-tinted? They should be blue-tinted

But then I remember- these toons believe that gender is a construct, of course they'd forgo logic while pushing an agenda.

Yes. Monkeys are associated with wildness, abandon, and undisciplined behavior, as well as being fun, clever, and a little tricksy. Hanuman and Sun Wu Kung/Son Goku are both big examples from classic literature. And yes, Goku from Dragonball is named after Son Goku of the Journey To The West epic; Dragonball is basically a retelling of JTTW, right down to the suspicious pigman.

Japanese are basically ignorant of how the Big Lips/Coal Black Skin visual is perceived in the West, and they generally don't give a shit. To them, it harkens back to 70's anime with notes of the yamababa/mountain witch legends.

(notice how they are almost always female. Male NBs are extremely rare)

It took me a lot of time to recognize those two as Shadow and Knuckles. What the fuck is that color palette? It honestly hurts my eyes. And what's with the rings and the faces and... Everything? It is pretty damn bad just because of the changes in color. Everything else just adds to the shittiness of it.
