Ha I love how they gave teen Steven stereotypical "girlyboy" traits like pink hair, painted nails and short shorts. Guess they're implying that all boys that are raised by women end up as gay stereotypes.
To be fair, Steven's mother had pink, curly hair sort of like that (but not in such an ugly style). The rest I have no explanation for, other than Tumblr's bizarre obsession with making male characters more feminine.

I honestly thought the artist zombified the living hell out of him, then tried to correct that and pass it off as something of value.

Do any of them realize, that if taken to the logical extreme, drawing ever-increasingly feminized men, and increasingly masculine women, just ends up with you back where you started?

Every woman will be a head-shaven, grizzly space marine full of muscles and armor...and every man will be a fairy wearing thong armor.

The fun thing is that this whole thing is doomed to die with the SJW fad. Mainstream consumers are rightfully judgmental of a character's first impression (which is bound to be entirely visual), same as real life. That limits the market to other SJWs in the same wavelength, and weirdos whose fetish happens to be mannish girls and/or femmy guys. That audience is not very large and is bound to deflate over time as the fad dies...so yeah.
(Of course, stories with "ugly" characters can work, but they usually compensate the looks of a character or general style with compelling writing, experiences the audience can relate to, and other things. Knowing SJWs spend too much time in hugboxes and echo chambers... and get offended at everything else...well, I'd expect them to fail at writing experiences the average person can relate to.)

At least be ugly in an appealing way like Freddy Krueger or this. But they miss the point of how to do that.

Yeah, their stuff looks like it's ugly simply for ugly's sake. Nothing more.

Then again, I can't see them listening to any art teachers either. So unless this dies out in a painful fashion, I don't think they'll be stopping the ugly any time soon.

I personally predict the fad won't reach the end of this decade. It's simply too hard to market this level of intentional ugly outside of the hugbox.

Even if it did hit the mainstream, we are talking people who ugly up cartoons for kids and anime to get asspats from the SJW crowd, (which is starting to be more noticed and ridiculed as they keep pissing entire communities off), or because of ideas like "smashing the gender binary", or because of being insecure teenagers that wish ugly was the norm. This caustic combo makes it tough to produce compelling visuals or stories: It'll always be derivative works driven by spite or immaturity or an agenda. And here we all know how such things work out out there.

The ones trying to pursue a legit art career will be forced by editors or the need to expand their audiences to conform to the mainstream, or put the effort to make ugly become meaningful and interesting. The ones that don't? Well, they'll probably grow bored of it over time, stick to a niche audience, abandon art as time becomes scarce when they become adults, or become lolcows.

Personally, I find this a complete eyesore. I am not a good artist or anything, but I think there's more to artistic expression than pissing off people you dislike or doing the exact opposite of everyone else. That immaturity seeps into the art and makes it to be perceived as such.

Nobody wants to look at ugly stuff that isn't funny ugly, like Basil Wolverton. That's pretty much why this is never going anywhere.

I think a lot of their art would be better if they didn't have this mindset because I've seen some people with talent scream about sexy female characters and sameface, but they aren't do anything to improve themselves either.

Y'know in a way I can respect the whole "fuck the system" mentality that these people have. But this shit is just hard to look at.

Also this goes against my headcanon of Snow White being a gay black midget in drag, which pisses me off to no end.
