It's an unknowing flaunt of their privilege being able to waste food like that being mostly upper middle class and never have to worry about food. Plus it's something that is oddly common in cartoons.

It probably stemmed from the infamous stock image of a black kid with a pizza on his head and somehow evolved from a parody of that to a legit "arty tumblr thing" like the flower crown thing possibly stemmed from an obscure meme.

It's always the same things on Tumblr.
At least with deviant art you have a plethora of cancer, both popular and obscure. Tumblr just circle jerks the same things (Steven Universe, Dangan Rompa, Homestuck) into oblivion.

Though I guess that's the same thing on DA, though different interests- weird ass fetishes of children's cartoon characters.

It's true that DA has it's own weirdass trends and in-jokes, but tumblr is so much more annoying with the way their trends come with this holier-than-thou attitude that they're progressive because they made half the Harry Potter cast POC/LGBT+. At least some inflation artist on DA usually knows they're a freakshow.

At least some inflation artist on DA usually knows they're a freakshow.

As well more than likely would draw better or at least not intentionally draw uglier than sin.
