That's actually more common that it looks. Something about feminizing overly masculine men turns them on, like ascribing feminine qualities to them or drawing them in women's lingerie. It's most likely a fetish that ended up masquerading as progressive on Tumblr, likely to fight toxic masculinity and traditional gender roles.

Mage characters being skimpily dressed is one of the biggest fantasy tropes in Japan. The ladies (all predominately magic users) from final fantasy 2-6 all wore leotards and scarves for example.
