For those who don't know, Silent Hunter is a series of submarine simulations where you captain a U-Boat/Submarine during WW2, attempting to sink eneemy merchant tonnage in the war in an effort to starve out the island nations of either Great Britian or Japan, depending on which game you are playing. The challenge comes, especially as the war goes on and enemy technology improves, from attempting to cleanly get in and out without being detected, as being detected is a death sentence (If you've seen Das Boot, you know what I mean).
The most recommended entry into this series is Silent Hunter 4, which was originally just about the USN efforts in the Pacific, but got an expansion about the German Efforts in the Indian Ocean. This expansion allowed modders to greatly expand on the content, and now with the right mods (I use Operation Monsun and Run Silent Run Deep), you can seamlessly swap between playing the German Atlantic campaign and the American Pacific one.
There also is the F2P game Silent Hunter Online, which is much less Sim like than the other entries, and is stuck in development limbo as during Open Beta the dev team announced it was shutting down development, but keeping the game running indefinably. However, if you can withstand the early game grind, it's still a fun diversion. Plus once you get far enough you can do wolfpack missions, which are neat.
There's also Silent Hunter 5 but.. we don't talk about that.
So, anyone else ever play any of these games?
