if this is a shitpost, lol, and disregard the rest of this post. if this isn't a shitpost, then allow me to put on my Redditor hat, kind sir, if only for the briefest of moments.
there is a basic truth about the world you're misunderstanding. people's stated principles and their actual principles often differ. according to the ACLU's
mission statement, its goal is to "preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country." but you'll also notice in that very same mission statement they sketch out a very particular, ideologically colored vision of what that entails:
Whether it’s achieving full equality for LGBT people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.
this is why you should immediately distrust anybody claiming to fight for noble virtue and high principles beyond personal interest.
everyone ultimately fights for their personal interest, whether it's for wealth, power, or the spread of their stupid opinions. this isn't a failure, it's the normal, inevitable state of things. you should always aspire to be better, but also be aware that you - along with the rest of society - are subject to the limitations of human existence, no matter how hard anybody tries to obscure it with cope.
