This is exactly what verification on most social media sites has turned into. The damn sites turned it into a club themselves, when set up (like most ideas) it was a smart idea. "Is this really Robert DeNiro, oh he has a blue check mark so twitter checked and it is", but around the time they unverified Milo for wrong-tweets... it became a sort of 'approved of by site' badge and became worthless.

I remember when Pewdiepie started a trend of purposefully getting unverified for some reason or another, probably memey, and media went crazy saying that PDP got unverified for being a Nazi.
 
I think my favorite part about Shane's youtube channel is when I google "shane holmberg youtube" the first result a) isn't Shane and b) is far more interesting than Shane, despite the highlight being a short two part series where a young man attempts to eat an empty pringles can with minimal commentary.
