It can happen in the panhandle, but not so much the rest of Florida. You need elevation to get floodwaters really moving.

Tropical Storm Debby caused flash floods up there since it took the perfect path to inundate Georgia and their clayey soil upstream. Flooding in Florida can get bad but it's usually not the "holy shit the river just took my house" type of flooding.
On that note, houses on those mountain and hill country rivers really need different building codes to account for how these rivers and creeks flood.

Incidentally one of those places is Marlinton West Virginia.

Its really cool to see. They are basically using the same sort of structural design you would see from houses that are built on a barrier island in hurricane prone regions.

I posted this as a thread in articles and news, but it sort of goes here too. There was a forest fire caused by a lightning strike on July 4th at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It has now burned down the lodge and most of the buildings in the north rim. It caused chlorine gas leak from a water treatment plant into the canyon forcing an evacuation down to the colorado river. It has completely devastated the north rim.
It is at 11,000+ Acres at 0% containment still.

Crosspost from USPG2:
8.0 quake off Alaska. Hawaii has tsunami alerts. Steve is on it.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=FqpANrj3Efg
EDIT: it was just upgraded to an 8.7. That's massive.
A magnitude 8.7 earthquake hit off the east coast of Russia (Kamchatka) about an hour ago. Hawaii’s currently under tsunami warning.

EDIT: California and Alaska are also under tsunami watch.

EDIT 2: Wikipedia is already calling this a megathrust, which implies to me that there’s a chance it might end up rated worse than 8.7. Additionally, there have apparently already been 13-foot tsunamis in Kamchatka.

EDIT 3: rating updated to magnitude 8.8, making it the sixth-largest earthquake since the beginning of recorded earthquake history.

For reference: the 2011 Tohoku earthquake was initially rated at magnitude 7.9, before being upgraded to 8.8… and, finally, 9.0-9.1.

EDIT 4: Alaska and California Watches upgraded to Advisories. Here’s an A&N thread on the matter; it’ll probably host any further updates.

Right now some extremely intense thunderstorms are impacting Dodge City and Garden City, KS. Winds range from 70-90 MPH and one of the warned storms has hail up to 3". Any of these may produce tornadoes.

People on the east coast should be watching Hurricane Erin if they aren't. It's not behaving how they were predicting, and here in Nova Scotia we have a warning for Risk of life threatening rip currents.

Yeah to my untrained eyes Hurricane Erin looks like it's going to get closer to land than they keep showing on the weather maps.

Be careful out there.

His livestreams are actually quite good but god I hate his video forecasts. Pure hypecasting bullshit
I much prefer Max Velocity, for starters he's an actual meteorologist but mainly because I can't stand that annoying fucking AI bot thing Ryan Hall uses on his streams.

Fuck yeah for early cold. Winter keeps the melanated people inside and I get a few months of peace.

The summer wasn't hot enough, they have taken the foyer. We've barred the second door, but cannot hold them for long. The air vibrates... Buzz. Buzzes in the mist. We cannot get out. A shadow moves in the garden... We cannot get out... They are coming.

I always thought Ryan Hall was a meteorologist. At least that’s what he portrays in his streams. Do you have a link to anything that says otherwise?

I do hate the stupid AI bot.

He studied meteorology but dropped out partway through to focus on his channel. However, he does retain a bunch of meteorologists on the side to help with the content.

Ryan Hall was great when he first started out, he was to the point and informative while managing to be a bit entertaining without detracting from the seriousness of the situation during serious weather events. I also appreciated that he helped bring attention to fundraisers and the need for cleanup volunteers, especially in poverty stricken areas that are always last to receive any assistance. It was also nice to have some Southern representation.

Ever since he became famous, I find him annoying and don't watch him anymore. I can't stand his click baity fearmongering prediction videos.

Did not know that. Why on Earth would you drop out before finishing your degree? I would finish and get it if for no other reason than to help maintain my credibility in the field. This makes me dislike him more.

After growing up with an interest in meteorology, Hall took classes in broadcast meteorology at Mississippi State University and worked as a weatherman for the local television station WYMT in Eastern Kentucky. However, Hall said he chose to leave his degree program and WYMT after he decided he wanted to work more in the field, rather than the television studio

Out of nowhere, Hurricane Humberto showed up and became a high-end Cat 4 basically overnight:

Last advisory was 11am EST and it's almost certainly railing up against Cat 5 territory at this point. NOAA's probably going to bump it up at 5pm or so. Pretty crazy for a storm that wasn't even a hurricane until yesterday morning. This hurricane season has been so weird so far. Every storm has either been a piddly tropical storm or an absolute monster Cat 4 or Cat 5. Thankfully, like Erin and Gabrielle, Humberto is predicted to stay pretty far from land and just be another fish storm.

It's Category 5 now with further intensification expected.
Funny enough this might lead to 09L staying away from the states. The rare circumstance where a stronger hurricane is better.
