My guess is that they're gearing up to sell us the same games again, in a different format.
NSO Dreamcast & Master System would be cool. I'd like to Phantasy Star Online a go in as close to the original experience as possible since I missed out on it back in the day.

Considering how super slow Nintendo is to drip-feed updates to their regular NSO lineups, I highly doubt we're ever going to get another Sega-related NSO unless they decide to gift people another NSO when the Switch 2 shows up (optimistic, I know, but that's the BEST case scenario).

If they DO give us another sega-related NSO, Master System would be the more logical choice, but I have a feeling that would be a monkey-paw wish with the result being "oh you meant GameGear, right?", and trust me, unless it's something like Sonic Drift 2 (where it was ONLY for the GameGear), you do NOT want to play Master System games with a cropped resolution.

Sega's Western CEO Isn't Interested In Saturn And Dreamcast Mini Consoles

I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me. I want to embrace modern gamers. We are not a retro company. We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.
Translation: "No, you can NOT access older content. We WILL feed you nu-goyslop versions of said older content, and you WILL enjoy them. Now shut up and consoom product."

>I want to embrace modern gamers.
Yea, I see how well that's working out for you. Remind me, how well did Hyenas do?

>We are not a retro company
"We just constantly release a fuck-ton of roms in a fuck-ton of collections everytime a new console generation comes out! it's totally different!"

>We really appreciate our legacy
"that's why we have a good chunk of them locked up in the vault while we focus on only a small amount of IPs!"

>otherwise we’ll become history
At this point, maybe that's for the better. You fuckers haven't had the best track record after the Sega Genesis.

It gets even worse because: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckgnj7e8028o

Sega is considering launching its own Netflix-like subscription service for video games, a move which would accelerate gaming's transition towards streaming.

There are already a number of similar services on the market - such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus - which see gamers pay a monthly fee for access to a range of titles rather than owning them outright.

Sega's president Shuji Utsumi told the BBC such subscription products were "very interesting", and his firm was "evaluating some opportunities".

"We're thinking something - and discussing something - we cannot disclose right now," he said.

Are they trying to do Sega Channel 2, but gayer and shittier?
They are WAY too late on that, and will fail immediately

For one thing, Sega Channel had a better selection of games that rotated every month, including region exclusive games (e.g. Mr. Nutz and Mega Man Wily Wars) listed as "Sega Channel exclusives".

Second, every month has a different theme, no just with the game selection, but the GUI/Menu. There was one time September was considered a "back to school" month, so they had a couple edutainment games (Richard Scarry's Busytown, The Magic School Bus, etc...). October was obviously halloween themes with scary games. Ain't no way modern sega is going to do that, it'll have the same bland boring look as everything else with no music or a barely ambience.

"You will own nothing and like it!" - Every video game company in current year.
It's even dumber than that. You can't even stream or rent older games anyways. It's literally just piracy and emulation to play tons of older titles. It's not like SEGA is making any money from probably most of their massive back catalog of arcade and console games. They are not making the games commercially available in literally any way. Not only are they failing in game preservation but they are missing out on tons of money and even brand loyalty.

These companies are all run by either idiots or people actively destroying them from the inside.

Yes. Like I said, that has been the general trend with software development as of late.

You guys are hyperfocusing and subsequently doomering over just one small aspect of it when the grander scale of things portends something much worse. If you're gonna bemoan these circumstances, you may as well look at the bigger picture as well while you're at it, because imagine losing even the ability to pirate and emulate your games because an operating system goes full on "service" – you don't own what you install and you may even have to pay a recurring fee just to continue using your own computer. ISPs already function similarly in this regard (you don't own your internet, after all, it is a service that is provided to you) and even your preferred provider could always change their TOS to include greater crackdowns on end user activity and rate limits to discourage said piracy.

I've decided that this is all on purpose internal sabotage purported by Chinese plants to lower the value of the company so tencent can buy them cheap.

Sega doesn't even have a new console to attatch the service onto like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony do, let alone the numbers to justify delisting everything from Steam. They'll still have their die-hards, true, but even they will nope out at the sight of a price hike due to a lack of funds to keep the service running. Time will tell if this becomes the new Stadia tho.

Sega Admits It Doesn't Know How Many Games It Owns

Speaking during SIGGRAPH 2024, Sega's Yosuke Okunari spoke about the company's efforts to document and preserve development materials related to its games. He admits that the company only began to take the preservation of such material seriously in 2023.
