This has all been planned for years, they've been talking about it for ages, discussing what old IP would be worth bringing back, Hyenas has nothing to do with it, the obvious reaction to that was SEGA telling CA to sit down, shut the fuck up and focus on making Total War less shit

I'm surprised at stuff like Eternal Champions making the cut though, it was very much a product of its time
Maybe they can get arcsys or SNK to do it so it's not dog shit.

Might want to narrow that field even further, as the most well-known Genesis exclusive fighting game specifically (and only if games like TMNT don't count due to sharing names with other games on different platforms despite being its own unique version).
I did say possibly

Definitely one of the top five Sega Genesis fighting games about time-travelling warriors from different periods of history battling to decide the fate of the world, with World Heroes and Time Killers

So were Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. Practically every remotely active mainstream fightan franchise is based on a 90s game or even older IP. See, bringing back every random 80s and 90s thing is a product of our time. EC even had ripoffs of Morbius and Blade and Edgy Aquaman, more relevant now than ever before.

Can't dispute the char bio theme

Eternal Champions was pretty bad. Character designs were fun albeit very 90's (as to be expected) but the controls were dog shit. I think it was one of those fighters where special moves are done with the funky "Hold a button down, do the motion, and release" which is awkward to do. Weaponlord and certain versions of Primal Rage are like that too.

You're forgetting one

Oh good, they fucked up -yet another- female character

Have I mentioned how much I despise modern gaming yet? Because this is one of the main reasons why - if you want me to play as a female character, the LEAST you can do is make them appealing to look at. But for....

some strange reason, we're not allowed to have attractive female characters in vidya anymore.

At least the Shinobi game looks decent, so....one out of five?

I'm not sure which developer Sega hired (or even which of its in-house division), but either way it looks like flaming garbage
You can tell just by looking at what they did to the woman, it's a western indie dev
Shinobi looks to be by the devs of Streets of Rage 4 and they did a pretty good job with that, even if it also had a few iffy character designs

The uncanny valley design is so gross looking that it makes me unsurprised that they were paid to redesign in the most half-assed way possible

Very late to the 90s Genesis fighter discussion, but I do wanna say two things on TMNT Tourney Fighters and Eternal Champions, even if the gameplay wasn’t the best for each:

1) EC had some great music. Larcen’s and Senator’s theme (a goddamn metal version of Hail to the Chief) are bangers.

2) Genesis Tourney Fighters is the closest true Mirage-style TMNT vidya and perhaps product we will ever get. Seriously. They flat out directly copied the art style and indie sci-fi wonder of early Mirage, and everyone feels tough and cool while the stages feel like other worlds indeed. And the characters that weren’t in Mirage? They “Mirage-ized” completely successfully. Nobody can tell me that seeing the technodrome as an actual weapon of war with battle mecha being constructed in the background, that creepy initial tune giving way to a panicked action ditty, and Krang’s android having a weirdly mechanical voice was cool and creepy alike. And Karai’s themes and stages were truly what you expect of a true martial arts badass about to whoop you with without breaking a sweat like she is.

Either way, the controls were dog shit. Keep in mind that I can pull off SNK style special moves and shit.
Hmmm yes, charge motions are quite a challenge compared to pretzels, your story sounds very plausible and convincing.

You can't judge a book by its cover. But, you can make an educated guess.

Gotta say I'm equally mad about the Ax=Battler and Gilius=Thunderhead designs. It's not about women in bikinis this time, it's the abject lack of any proper Conan/Frazetta flavor at all. Cancelled protype looked better.
