Not only do we have acres of land, but we have hundreds of half built nuclear reactors. Back in the 50s and 60s, the US foresaw nuclear power being the only sustainable way to eliminate high oil usage, so they paid General Electric to build a shitload of reactors. While most of them were being built, production stopped for numerous cost and political reasons, but mainly because they drastically overestimated how much energy the US would need in the future. Some of these sites are fairly well kept, and I imagine at least some of the foundations and structures could be reused. If they're a total loss, I'm pretty sure the land is already owned and zoned for nuclear energy production.

We have so much wasteland deserts that even if there is a meltdown there is no water table for the melted reactor fuel to contaminate, which remains the only worst case scenario for a negative void coefficient reactor. But we can also design reactor containment to make this safe even in places with a high water table. Which we have. The worst nuclear disaster in US History was 3 mile island, and if anything it was a success story. The worst case scenario occured, and the safeguards we had in place to deal with the worst case scenario WORKED.
