Stalker is a household name even for people who don't play the games yet it's in such a sorry state. Yet, Silksong and Elden Ring drop, somewhat meet expectations, and still fade into obscurity a few months later. Gaming gone bad for all the wrong reasons.
Stalker failed because it's not actually that good.
A while back I pirated the original one just to see, and it's honest-to-god borderline unplayable trash, where somehow turning up the difficulty is the only way to even make your character able to aim.
Everything looks like mud, everything feels awful, the AI is lobotomized, none of the characters communicate like human beings, massive amounts of bugs obviously...it's almost worse than a bargain bin asset flip on steam. Just on a moment to moment basis I was astonished at how awful it felt to play.
It was so bad I was actually insulted that fuckers online even dare to try to pretend like it's some outsider masterpiece. You look it up what's supposedly good about it and these ass-fingering retards go on about -the world- or some stupid shit.
I also pirated the 3rd game to see if it at least ever got better, and it was ok. It wasn't amazing, but I wasn't insulted. It's janky and the environment (anomalies, etc.) isn't realized to its full potential, the pacing of the game feels a little strange beyond the first half, the final area really loses the survival feel and is more about military shooter fare, but I finished it and was disappointed there wasn't more.
Still there are a lot of better games out there; aside from navigating the before mentioned anomalies (which almost feel incidental and poorly integrated into the world a lot of times. They're just weird fenced in areas where fire spews from the ground or gravity is wonky or whatever), you'd be just as happy playing one of the fallout games.
That's probably why it was forgotten. A bunch of retards online decided to pretend this awful-to-ok series was some shining gem just because they want to pretend they're auteurs who appreciate unconventional non-AAA videogames, then the public tried it and realized oh hey, this actually isn't very good. I've been mislead.
Yes it's a name people know, but that's because autistics online pretend it's good because they have autism and hear other autists online pretend it's good, so they pretend it is too.
