I do wonder if one of the reasons this turned into such a shitbomb, was because it has nothing to 'anchor' to. Gmod was always in the context of HL2. This was essentially just an asset dump and a phys engine. Which is just whatever? Anyway, when HL3 comes out, someones gonna make Gmod for that and Gary will kill himself.

It was a part, technically speaking, half life alyx was already released by the time s&box switched over to source 2. The main issues stemmed from the fact they wanted to do things their way instead of the way given to them, leading to them scrapping certain implementation already baked into source 2 to use their own implementation, like the entity system, leading to developers abandoning out of fear that things will always being a moving mess.

They also didn't make things better by not taking the pay cut in order to use Valve assets, leading to projects using valves IP like Team Fortress: Source 2 getting shut down, when it would have probably been fine.

Chet Faliszek, former writer for Valve, gives his thoughts on s&box. He thinks the "hot dog" people are horrible and doesn't understand why the game exists in the first place.

>Godot.
I agree with him on everything, but saying Godot...
The only other game I can think of that uses Godot is Slay the Spire 2 / Cruelty Squad.

Godot is a double edged sword. Ironically a lot of its underlying implementation of features are based of source 2, its actually really powerful, the only problem is getting used to it and the fact there's not a lot of tutorials for it or community made assets, especially for complex things like resources.

Its definitely a better option than some cobbled together monstrosity.

I remember seeing people talk about going over to it when Unity jewed out and was trying to shove advertisements into the free version of games for players or some shit.
Which I can get. I wouldn't want to make a game in an engine that acts like that either.
Just Godot seemed a real odd choice for everyone to suddenly go to. They really hate Unreal that much?

I remember it was that Unity Technologies wanted to implement a fee if your game made with the free edition of Unity got enough downloads. Of course, this was criticized for multiple reasons, including that bad actors could spam downloads to force developers to pay up.

no, you always had to upgrade your license depending how much money you made. right now you need to pay for pro if you make over 200k.

the main friction points where downloads (with no clear direction how to gauge that) and royalties (like unreal), which is where everyone shat their pants, retroactively.
shat their pants because it was a complete nothingburger for anyone reading the actual terms. simply put "made more than X (1 million iirc) in the last 12 months -> this is what you gotta pay going forward". if you made less you automatically got bumped down. if you had a breakthrough hit 5 years ago unity wouldn't care.
the retroactive thing was counting revenue, so when starting with the new scheme everyone had to pay accordingly, sometimes more, sometimes less. because of the high threshold and only the last 12 months, nothing would have changed for the vast majority of devs.

it was a good reminder indie devs are fucking retarded when it comes to money and the financial side of the business... (which rigatoni called out before, and of course was twisted out of context so everyone could shit their pants in righteous outrage :story: )

New upcoming UI update if anyone cares.

There was an S&box engine update that broke someone’s game. Garry Newman responded. No further news from OP.

Unity shitting itself to death over the past six years has been hilarious enough that it might even warrant its own thread. It's like a parody of a tech company IPO, they started out as THE big universal game engine, then they made everything suck gay nigger ass on purpose to make line go up and sold everything else for scrap, running off the assumption that all their users are locked in Adobe-style and are stuck using them. In reality they're quickly getting squeezed out both by Unreal becoming the AAA industry standard and by Godot capturing the AA and hobbyist market.

A Unity thread would be so kino. Remember when they were developing an inhouse game to dogfood their own tools and then decided that it was too much work?

And it's free. Learning Godot so I can make my own games for once.

There's normally an update every Wednesday, but we didn't get one last week for some reason.

First non-political message in S&box Trading Hub in roughly a month:

That server is dead and Alex got no response so he went to S&box Market Hub instead:

Hey Alex, news flash, this shit is dead. Your item isn't worth anything if nobody wants it.

Server admin straight up telling people to invest in regular stocks instead:

I look forward to the next time these losers complain about someone screenshotting stuff they posted on a public site.

The financial aspects of the S&box site are interesting because you can really see how astroturfed some of this limited-time stuff was.

Back when the S&box keys could be obtained freely but you needed to buy something to keep the game on your Steam account, I spent $4.50 on this shark mask. Yeah, yeah, I know, bad decision in retrospect and all that. At the time, I figured the game was still pretty rough, but buying in at $4.50 was still better than spending $20 later, plus thanks to the whole FOMO on cosmetics, I figured I could always sell it on the market to get my money back later.

So given that there are exactly 1,271 people who bought this mask while it was live and that number will never increase, wouldn't you assume that the value would go up? Apparently not, if the Steam market is anything to go by. Pretty much all the cosmetics dropped in price considerably.

I'm sure some dumbasses spent way more than I did and lost a ton of money over it, but it's still pretty funny to me that these just plummet in value and never increase because nobody wants to play this fucking game.

This dumb fucking retard could have just made Source 2 Gmod and instead he tried to out compete Roblox by using chodemen. Insane.

This has been hilarious and all but I could really go for something other than 'inept moron forces his deeply retarded ideas, refuses to reverse course, fails terribly'
