Honestly, I don't think this ending to Oniakashi is really an issue. Sure, Rena being unable to beat the clock is pretty dumb, but it's not actually all that important, and retarded shit is part and parcel with Ryukishi, with stuff like nobody figuring out Shion was impersonating Mion despite her constant spergouts, or everything surrounding Shannon/Kanon. It's all things I've come to expect when reading Ryukishi's works and I'm not going to be bothered by it. (Rena's dad getting violent was still trash, though)
The important parts of the story focus on Rika and Satoko, and I think they're executed pretty well here. Rika puts in a lot of genuine and sensible effort to avoid disaster, and she also doesn't immediately jump to suicide when things don't work out.
In Satoko's case, her motivation is explored in much further depth and it ties in well into her backstory and the events that happened after the original. She was someone whose fate was always shit and out of her control, and now she took control of her own fate and future in a horribly twisted way by controlling all the variables. It's the worst kind of "happy" ending she could've found, but it's still interesting and builds on her character in the original.

In essence, Satoko in Gou/Meguri is an exploration of Rika in Minagoroshi, around the time where Rika is confronted with the choice of either sacrificing Satoko and saving herself, or make a doomed effort to try to save Satoko. Rika was able to cling to the vestiges of her humanity due to the events of Minagoroshi encouraging her, but had she made the other choice, I don't think she would've ended up much better than Satoko in Meguri.
I think it's a neat concept, at least, to explore what would happen to a looper who was pushed past their breaking point in part due to the influence of an outright malicious actor, and how they could come to the conclusion that if they cannot find their happy future, they can instead come to enjoy their terrible present, in a twisted way. It's simply a tragedy of a different sort.

I think I actually like Satoko's Meguri backstory better than Takano's in Matsuribayashi, because Ryukishi really shat the bed there. The buildup for her was solid, with her desire to control everything and bring forth an inevitable future through sheer determination, but then Koizumi died and the plot went all "lol, lmao", and everything she did (including several atrocities) ended up as a complete waste of time. From then on, she just served as a pawn of Nomura, working towards a goal that wouldn't actually accomplish Takano's own goals, with all the buildup for her as a villain in Minagoroshi being wasted.
It still pisses me off how Nomura took over the main villain slot, rendered Takano pointless, and then got away with everything because Ryukishi wrote himself into a corner and stopped giving a shit.

Man it feels like it's been ages since I bothered with this series or thread.
Honestly, not sure what to even say at this point that I haven't said way back when SOTSU was still airing, seems like all the old bullshit hasn't changed in the manga.

While Meguri so far demonstrates things marginally better than GOU/SOTSU so far, it still has it's moments where I just go "How does this make sense? or Really?"

Example: You just had the festival go by, fun was had and it was a good time.
Then this happens

You literally saw that someone or something trapped your legs.
You had a bag thrown over your head while clearly being knocked down and forced down by someone.
You were injected in the arm while this was happening, there's no way you didn't feel that.

Then once it was all over and done with, what do you do? You just remove the bag and don't make anything of it. :stress:
Like for fuck sake, the rope is still attached to your legs and instead of deciding to seek help or go to the police OR tell your friends what just happened, what does the series do?

"Rena crazy now Mmmm Kay?"

Am I asking for too much? For this fucking series to have some semblance of common sense?
Like I get that the injection makes you crazy and amps to Hinamizawa syndrome to L5 depending on the victim (Since ya know, Mion best girl) but really, just like that? It's straight to murder town instead of looking at what literally happened to you no less than 2 minutes ago.

Even in the anime, it took her several days after being injected to go full L5 and start her murder spree, but here its just "Nah I'm gonna ignore this and never tell anyone, gotta kill dads hoe instead"

It was at that moment where I knew, that shitty writing will always be shitty writing, no matter what artist you have or how you try to decorate it.

Honestly, I'm just disappointed at this point, it feels like I'm reading the new material both out of spite and because I loved the originals, is it the same for anyone else?

I hope the next chapter actually shows HOW Satoko injected Mion, It's been forever since SOTSU and I still call bullshit on that. In fact there was an interview way back in the day where the creators were asked that same question and their answer was "It was too complicated to demonstrate so we skipped it"

Which needless to say is PR talk for "We were too retarded to come up with a plausible and believable scenario so we skipped it, Magic okay?"

Not holding my breath though, rant is over.

Honestly when you apply just a tiny bit of logic to the series, everything falls apart. At least it's still not as bad as Keiichi surviving a min of 10 stab wounds for probably an entire night before anyone could've even found him.

I remember people discussing about it. Some of them mentioned the possibility of Satoko somehow getting her hands on Mion's drink and spilling the contents of the syringe before giving it back to her (I don't even want to bother pointing out the many things that are wrong with this theory). Another theory had Satoko bumping into Mion and using that chance to inject her, as if she wouldn't feel that.

That was actually the plan, but the animators realized how stupid it would look and decided not to bother.

Anyway, I think I can kind of accept Satoko dragging Rika into the loops now. Since Eua gave Satoko a chance to relive what she considers the best time of her life, Satoko returned the favor by allowing Eua to watch Rika loop again. Normally, Satoko would never betray her best friend like that, but after being broken by the loops, she would obviously think differently. I can also see her being so focused on making the right choices that she'd never consider the possibility of Eua rigging the loops. Still, I'm not sure why she'd be willing to return to a Tatari loop. I guess Eua could force it, but even then, I don't see the manga version of Tatariakashi being anything but a shitshow.

I've also softened my opinion on the end of Oniakashi. I liked that Rika considered the possibility she might not be able to loop anymore. Satoko's behavior in the Sea of Fragments was very childlike, matching her goal of never growing up.

All that senseless killing between Satoko and Rika seems like they were trying to do a reincarnation plot as a cop out for weak storytelling. Just those two laid out side by side with knife wounds to their necks does not do anything to advance the story.

All I want is just more Hanyuu at this point.

Come to think of it, how did this not factor into her paranoia? She could have believed Teppei did it to her on Rina's behalf.

I can't imagine watching Satoko brute force an 8-digit password would be entertaining for Eua. Assuming each attempt took like an hour cause she had to kill Rika, walk to the clinic, kill Takano and then try a number it would take something like 11 thousand years to brute force the code assuming at worst case it was literally 99999999 and she started from 00000000

She's an ancient, inhuman being who exists outside of ordinary time and space. She's probably pretty patient if she knows a payoff is incoming, and she can likely just fast-forward through all the parts she doesn't care about.

The framing of this panel can also easily be assumed as Eua glimpsing through dozens of fragments simultaneously, like she's watching a training montage.
Bad: Satoko knows about the fucking sword now.
Eua already told her about it in Satokowashi, so that was to be expected, and it fixes a notable plothole from the anime, where the sword was already missing from the statue in Watadamashi even though Satoko wouldn't be able to retrieve it yet.

Oh, so she did. I couldn't remember for certain if she had, but it makes sense. The real problem is it could mean that stupid battle will happen.

All it's missing is just that "Push it to the Limit" music.

Wouldn't it be easier to just kidnap Takano and get the password from her? Or trick her into opening the case somehow (you know, considering traps are supposed to be Satoko's speciality).

Satoko really loves her some cookies.

Anyway, it’s going to be interesting what she’ll do to Mion and Shion next.

The death montage also explains Satoko's trigger finger at the end of Nekodamashi. At that point she's killed Rika and herself so many times she is indiscriminate in reasons for ending a loop and jumping into another one on a whim.

But that also gives an impression that she's far removed from death and humanity itself. When you think about her actions in the manga Tataridamashi she seemed almost willing to let Rika die but continue living in that fragment without her, but must've changed her mind when Keiichi went after Rika anyway. Hopefully these changes build up to a more satisfying ending than Sotsu's

Obligatory

I know I said it already in my previous post, but I really hope the manga explains HOW she injected \ infected her with the HS.

Come to think of it, if Satoko could make Teppei reform himself with memory leaks, why couldn't she change Rika's mind that way?

Considering the fact she sees this as a game, it probably wouldn't feel the same to her. Besides, I'm pretty sure Eua would somehow throw a wrench into that idea since that'd be too easy and "boring".
