I'm honestly not sure what gave you that impression. Higurashi had a heavy focus on the mystery from the very beginning.
The very first scene of the story involves the main protagonist beating two of his friends to death, which sets the tone pretty well.
The first half of the first three stories may have had a slice-of-life focus, but the second half, which was really the meat of the story, was clearly about horror and suspense, setting up various mysteries for the reader to solve, and the latter half of Higurashi has even less slice-of-life and much more drama and resolutions to the ongoing mystery.
Most of the anime and VN are about their days at school. There's no mystery to that.

It’s pretty funny how this manga had turned from figuring out one mystery that is affecting people through a murder now turned to people hypnotizing themselves into forced injections and having to kill each other. Yet, Satoko had to kill herself just so she could be with Rika.

I’m still trying to figure out the point of all this.

Ciconia in general is pretty fucked writing wise. It doesn't have a kill em all ending but the setting is so fucked by the end of the game it has to have a reset button for some levity. So either restart and lose all character progress, or try to justify how the 99% of the human population dying somehow doesn't kill everything.

I haven't read it, either. I'm just about to reach the climax of Umineko's Episode 1, so I still have a long ways to go before I can poke my head into Ciconia.

If the second part doesn't come out by the time I finish Umineko proper... then oh boy.

Havent read Ciconia yet, am I missing out?
It's good but its clearly setup for what SHOULD be the next 3 other phases. If you decide to read it, prepare to wait for what might be a long time (after Silent Hill f drops) for the chance of another installment.

Thoughts on Episode 1? Most people think of it as their least favorite due to the slow pacing of the beginning.

I've read the manga up to the first third of Episode 4. I think EP1 does a fine job of setting things up for when EP2 and 3 shakes things up, but yeah, it's not the favorite of the parts for sure.

But man, does Ryukishi like to pad shit out and repeat himself. I feel like a few thousand words needed to be trimmed from the script.

Jesus it's been 4 years since the first episode. Ciconia not bad but it definitely amplified the tranny and gorn parts of the series.
safe to say its entered half life 3 territory by now.

It's going to be funny when after Silent Hill f releases there is still no sign at all of Ciconia continuing.
Looks like he's going to shoehorn Rika into the protagonist somehow.

It’s really interesting on hindsight that in
Rika was basically down to her last loop or fragment when she had her "perfect clear". If you remember from the VN, she was slowly running out of time to work with in each new loop or fragment, and by that one, she only had mere weeks left instead of the years per loop she had in the past. Effectively it was her last real attempt she could have before tragedy would become guaranteed in all future loops as her starting point would become too late.
You know, because the whole justification of "gradual buildup of (notably rare) cross-fragment memories" for all of the characters being unrecognisably different now doesn't work unless he's retconned these fragments to be effectively infinite. I wouldn't be surprised if he simply forgot or retconned that detail too.
