A'ight I'm try to read that Reiwa manga since I'm bored, and while I'm not hating it, exactly, I'm just frustrated with how many beats they're recycling from Higurashi. I'm also frustrated with how the kids are pretty much just carbon copies of their parents, you can't exactly say they're their own individual because it relies heavily on them being kids of these beloved characters. Though even our beloved heroes haven't exactly changed from when they were protagonists, they're barely adults in nature.

This'll most likely change when I finish Oniokoshi-hen, but they're practically going out of their way to paint the Polaris cult as clearly the bad guys, and yet I just know they're going to try to show us how they're totally not creepy and not bad people, just different you guys! They're not bad guys at all, trust me! Fuck off with that shit, this is the first arc and we already have proof something's not right about them. At least with the "zealots" of Oyashiro, they were totally normal people in day-to-day life. Does Ryukishi even remember how he wanted to approach that possible "a Oyashiro cult was the perpetrator" theory anymore?

Also fuck off with this shit:

I hate this shit in making Teppei a good guy now.

EDIT: Starting Hoshiwatashi-hen now, and

lulz

Also the first thing I've noticed is this mangaka actually draws everything in the panel. Those are some damn good background artwork, and I like Kei Natsumi's work.

So uh, about that anthology comic series, Kataribanashi-hen? You know, the one where artists literally drew out submitted fanfiction from 2007 to 2009?

Turns out the chapter titled Satokoishi-hen is a Teppei redemption one-shot, and it'ssssssssssss kinda decent? It's still infuriating because we have proof from the sound novel that he's a monster who never actually cared about Satoko and wouldn't hesitated to abuse her in any way, but the one-shot made it to where he came into the picture wanting to put on a ploy to deceive Satoko into thinking he's changing, though what his original intentions were for it never really came to fruition because he's coming around to somewhat liking the change, and Ritsuko pretty much thwarts his plan. Yeah, in order to make Teppei look good in comparison, Ritsuko has to be the monster Teppei confronts when she kidnaps Satoko to force him to comply with her basically using him as the offering to the Sonozakis, but she was going to kill Satoko anyway because she's a cunt. And we get this image of Keiichi upper-cutting her after Teppei took the blow for Satoko.

So Teppei is injured so badly he ended up with amnesia, and Satoko decides to call him "father" as a way to start over with him. That world apparently ends happily as Rika ponders that perhaps Teppei actually had some scars of his own and he needed to be given a chance. Oh, and Teppei still mentions before he succumbs to his amnesia that he had been having bad dreams, but it wasn't of him dying alone, it was of him beating the shit out of Satoko. Oh, and he apparently was raised in a single-parent household.

So I'm thinking Ryukishi may have stolen this fanfic's basic idea for his own, but fucked it up (I guess?) by inserting it into the series where Satoko becomes a murderous vengeful witch because she didn't want to study. He wasn't given an actual proper chance to have any kind of atonement that wasn't him being the asshole victim. Which is why his heel-face turn at the end of the series is extremely uncomfortable and undeserved because he did nothing to deserve it due to contrived circumstances. Ryukishi's end "canon" result is that much of a failure, fucking fanfiction is the superior take on the idea that could've potentially won me over to the idea of a Teppei redemption arc despite the stupid amnesia trope.

I'm left here speechless by this discovery. I had tried years ago to find Kataribanashi-hen scans, but only found a scant few of these one-shots that I didn't bother digging around for more. Apparently this particular chapter only got translated early last year according to this site I'm using, so only a very small handful of Higurashi fans ever knew about this prior to the beginning of 2021, and I don't think any one of those brought it up before.

I hate this. I hate this because I don't know how to process this after having spent energy two years ago (holy shit) getting pissed off over it. I probably would've had something to say back then if I had known about this potential act of plagiarism because I'm autistic like that to have remembered something like this. Fuck.

Another fic one-shot in the anthology is one where Satoko and Rika have a fight because Rika accidentally broke Satoko's mug that Satoshi had given to her. The fight lasts like all day or a couple days where Satoko left to go back to her old house, so the two are just moping and wondering about the other. They do reconcile, of course, because that's what friends do.

Well, Hanyuu apparently thought it was going to become a... bombastic fight.

Coincidence? Maybe. Stuff like this is played up for laughs and exaggerated to shounen-esque levels, and of course Daybreak exists. But after that Teppei fic one-shot, now I'm not so certain that Ryukishi didn't take parts he liked from these fic submissions when he was writing Shitsugou's script. You know he had himself a copy or two of the manga he dusted off.

Reminds me of how Umineko's plot is supposedly ripped off some Japanese mansion mystery novel Ryukishi pretended he didn't know existed. ... And how like all the outfits in that series are ripped out of fashion magazines.

I'm bored, so I'm reading Gou and mostly just skimming the dialogue because I already know this shit and noticing Tomato was really skipping around trying to get to things faster. Then I notice this:

That gun has to be fucking Photoshopped. It looks like Tomato didn't want to draw a gun and just Google Imaged a gun in multiple angles, whipped the lasso tool around them and pasted them on, and flimsily threw a filter on the layers without any attempt to make it look like the gun's in the scene itself. Only thing he bothered to trace ink on is everything below the barrel. It's bugging the crap out of me.

I was checking when it was the last time I touched Umineko on Steam and I saw this in the community posts:

I'm just going to drop a page from the new Reiwa chapter out of context:

Just watched Sotsugou and...
There was so much potential for Sotsugou to be good, but it seems like Ryukishi's desire to shock and upturn expectations, got in the way of telling a good story.
Personally, I thought Gou was alright, until we get to the cat deceiving arc, there it just kinda devolved into the "loli guro" arc.
But I think Gou still managed to salvage it's self, I was still somewhat interested in how things would play out, I also thought we'd get some new stories implied in cat deceiving. Stories involving Mion's mother, Akasaka and Kimiyoshi suffering from Hinamizawa syndrome? Yes Please! That sounds awesome!
And then I stumbled onto this thread and saw nope, that's not what we're getting...
Even with this thread steeling my expectations, it was pretty bad, if I hadn't forced my brother to watch this along with me, I probably would've hated it, his reactions gave me a laugh.

Why didn't we get those stories hinted at in Gou?
Why did you waste time just rehashing the same stories, why was Ooshi such chad, seriously, that even in his state he saw through it all, Rika, why where you such a dipshit? I mean i know why, why did this series go from being a mystery horror into a maho shojonen brawl? Why? WHY?!?!

My final thoughts overall: what a waste...
