So any first members among us wanna give a rundown of the episode?

I’m not a First Member buuuttt the first episode has been posted on YouTube by someone, I’d recommend seeing it before the copyright hammer comes down.

Anyway:

-Group arrives in Atlas and see a broadcast with Winter Schnee getting a cameo, Jason’s voice is a dogshit replacement for Vic, and Maria takes the group to meet someone who can help.

-Yang attacks a cambot that snaps her photo, while Maria explains how Mantle got its ass kicked in the war and rebuilt itself in the clouds~ Cue obligatory 1984 things from rundown city, soldiers posted all over, post-boards with mentions of a election, Dust Embargo, and a Slain Journalist.

-Some drunks talk about how great Atlas is and one yells at Blake, before being an evil racist which leads to him getting dumped in the trash by Weiss via her abilities despite them needing to keep a low-profile.

-Morons run after soldiers start coming to the scene, they end up at a clinic ran by the man who recalibrates Maria’s eyes every ten years;Pietro Polendina, who volunteers at a clinic and is the guy who pretty much invented Penny as more Pinocchio allusions come with this.

-More details on how Jimmy Ironwood went batshit paranoid after the FoB, and Pietro recognizes Team RWBY due to Penny talking about them so much~ Sirens start going off and Grimm attack which leads to our band of Morons going on the offense.

-Fanservice Approaches! Penny is back from the dead and was rebuilt by her father, after her core was retrieved from the Arena and she can fly~ She then proceeds to fly at Ruby for a high speed hug, breaking that girl’s poor spine while WBY comments on the reunion as the Audience Surrogate, Blake in particular calling it wholesome in a cheesy as fuck way.

-Suddenly our Morons are captured by a group called AS-OPS (GEDDIT? AESOP'S FABLES!), for entering a kingdom without clearance and for fighting Grimm without a license along with the Relic going into the hands of the leader guy.

The end.

Holy crap the episode sounds like total trash, which is consistently the case for the show after Volume 2. And I love how it took them literally years to acknowledge that Penny could be rebuilt after spending all that time acting like she was dead and gone. People had been pointing this out since she "died" in Volume 3 and only now do they bring her back as a cheap attempt at damage control and pandering.

For the cheap ones who don't wanna shill out for first membership. Don't know how long it'll be up though.

Edit: Crows' new VA sucks.

Edit 2:

If I could give my two cents here, and spoilers (not that I care), but to me, while the episode wasn't 'bad', it still has a lot of illogical thought put into it.

Like, why is it so hard for the crew to contact Ironwood? Especially since they got someone who can literally transform into a bird and fly past security without arousing suspicion. Also, I'm confused as to why they can't contact Winter.

Ironwood and Winter both know Crow, to the point where they have that sort of begrudging relationship with each other, and are well aware that he worked for Ozma/Ozpin/whoever the hell you wanna call him - And Ironwood, presumably would know about Ozma's secret of body transference.

Like, maybe I'm being a dumb dumb, but that's a pretty big plothole to not address.

Penny is back

Oh, poor sweet autistic machine girl, we all knew this day was coming.

How will they sour you for Twitter head pats? Have you change your skin color after this season to not look like the evil racists of Atlus? Grind an episode to a halt so you can explain that even though you have the appearance of a girl, your agender since you have no feeling of gender? That you're a robot with an Aura cause brave poor people get abortions, and you use them as a power source?

Oh please, cruel writers, keep best girl dead.

Can’t speak on the gender front, but at the very least Penny keeps her original skin tone and hair color which is surprising since gingers typically get replaced with black people in virtually anything that gets adapted by Hollywood in their desperate need to appear to be woke and get SJW asspats.

Pietro is a black guy, so meh it depends on if you consider that ruined for Penny.

They’re sooo damn DEDICATED to show how off the deep-end that Jimmy has gone, but it’s badly conveyed on-screen and we haven’t even reached the inevitable Trump parallels with either Ironwood or Papa Schnee taking front and center for that hot mess lol.

I’m more annoyed with NO ONE recognizing RWBY or JNR as participants in the Vytal Tournament, with it being extremely glaring in the case of Yang who “assaulted an innocent teen boy” yet no one on this shithole show has a memory span greater than a goldfish~ When Penny’s old man started piecing the puzzle together after seeing Weiss and Ruby, I assumed that he recognized them from the Tournament broadcast but was ultimately let down when Penny was the reason why he knew them.

Okay, I agree with all these points, save for one.

Qrow's new VA isn't *that* bad. His first lines were kinda iffy but as the episode went on Jason fell into it a bit better.

You think bringing back Penny is this volume’s “episode that’s universally praised because they broke the emergency glass”? Last year, it was the one where they had Neo come back and fight Cinder.
Has to be, otherwise it's going to go downhill from here. Everything else is pretty bad.

Animation's still overly floaty as fuck (fuck motion capture, anyone who isn't ILM, WETA, Digital Domain or a video game company shouldn't be using it, especially not RT). And Jason's clearly unfit as Qrow's replacement. And I'm not entirely digging what is probably this arc's villain posse, thus leaving Salem and co. behind even further.

Seriously, how is it that we need villains completely unrelated to who is supposed to be the main bad guy and her henchmen. Vol. 5 had both the White fang and Raven's group of thieves, and Vol. 6 had Cordova all the while Salem just sits on her ass doing nothing and her group of diversity hires do even less. I get the feeling this is just going to be that all over again.

My thots so far:

1) A miserable dystopian shithole, annoying drunks, brown people chimping out and you needing a loicence to hunt the Grimm. Did our heroes arrive in Atlas or the United Kingdom?

2) RIP Vic. Qrow's new voice actor has a weak start, but it'll do for now.

3) I have to admit the spider legs make Pietro's wheelchair look pretty cool.

4) I recently listened to a stream Vexed Viewer did where he said that the worst case scenario would be Penny coming back and remembering Ruby. And it happened.

RUBY: Penny? It can't be! The Executor told me you fell before the Zerg I, I th- I thought you-

PENNY: Haha... Well, after my unfortunate defeat, my ruined body was recovered by our brethren. I now reside within the cold, robotic shell of a dragoon.

RUBY: Old friend- would that this never come to pass...

PENNY: Nonsense! There is no shame in defeat as long as the spirit is unconquered, and I am still able to serve Aiur Atlas to a degree.

(God I miss the first Starcraft. The writing was so good!) I suppose it's nice to meet Penny's father years after he stopped being relevant.

5) AS-OP CAPTAIN: Oi! Stop roight there criminal scum! Do you have a loicence to foight the Grimm here? Do you even have a loicence to carry assault spoons let alone these dangerous weapons? I don't bloody think so. You are under arrest for committing ridah by not having a loicence and thus becoming mortad. Everything you nonces say can and will be used against you in shariah court. Now take these bloody kuffar to the bin!

6) I unironically like the cartoony/animesque visuals of the OP. Eat me!

Overall it wasn't good, but it could have been worse.

I honestly agree. It's an improvement, but at this point, there's only so much further they can go down. I'm just glad my favorite VA is getting his paycheck at this point.

Funny enough, Crow did say he had a license.

I guess it's the good old "tie people up first, ask questions later"

TBH, I'd be down with how RWBY got caught by AS-OP ("RWBY ACTUALLY GETTING NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR BEHAVIOR YAY!") if I didn't know they'd plot magic their way out of it.

Actually I got a question - How would AS-OP know RWBYJNR + Crow, would be in the ship? They're right, but why the hell do they assume the teams were in the ship? The flight and grim attack could've easily been separate incidents.

I guess the script popped into their hands.

Honestly, while the crew is getting negative consequences for their actions, the way it's presented makes it come off as contrived. That or the fact the AS-OP are going to be just as competent as the robot guards were against the Grim in the series.

The reviews are coming in.

edit: Aden’s first review. If people get butthurt by this, the fandom is REALLY thin skinned.

Qrow might be a loicenced hunter, but did he have a loicence to openly carry an assault spork or, God forbid, a butter knoife in Atlas? I don't think so.
