The plane itself is similar to the US Air Force's reusable Boeing X-37 (X-37B) robotic mini-shuttle, which is sort of like a miniature, remote-controlled version of the International Space Station.

In itself, that's not a bad thing - many companies and governments are working on similar planes themselves.

But now Russia has announced that they plan to store nuclear warheads in their robotic plane.

Any bomber that can fly into outer space can probably be equipped with nukes anyways.

Why is anybody surprised? This is the next logical step in warfare, and there was already news about the Russians trying to do a nuclear underwater torpedo, its clear they are focusing research on new nukes.

It's the only way for that deteriorating shithole of a country to maintain any relevance at all.

I don't see how you'd shield something like that against an EMP anyway. It's just sabre-rattling and being, in general, scummy Russian shitbags.

The more they spend on the military, the sooner they'll go bankrupt again, just like the USSR. So, godspeed, I say.

Now why would you accuse Putin of sabre rattling, don't you know he's a good man who's unfairly treated by the (In capitals) LIBERAL WESTERN MEDIA!

This is some James Bond tier mad scientist shit. I'm half expecting Putin to do thE Dr. Evil pinky thing while he rants about his plans for world domination.

Nuclear torpedoes are in service since the 50s.
This must be retaliation for NATO setting up the ABM defense shield in Poland. Only way for Russia to re-establish MAD in Europe is to get orbital delivery system.
Seeing the patriot missile 's dismal performance against simple Scud missiles ,i really doubt that the ABM system is anywhere close to its necessary effectiveness.

The ones I heard were not submarine launched nuclear torpedoes.

But one that travels underwater to avoid anti-air fire and strikes at coastal targets from the sea. Like a tiny robotic submarine with a nuclear warheard. Mind it may never have gotten off the planning table stage.

The leaked torpedo on the media photo was a normal looking one.

That's the way I see it too. Russia is taking provocative actions to rile up the international community and to stay in the headlines. In my opinion it's because of some post USSR nationalistic sentiment. They're attention whoring like North Korea but the scary thing is that they have the resources to carry through with their threats.

It's complete sabre rattling, espeically as any sort of NBC weapon in space would be wholly inefficient, when the simple fact is the easiest WMD you could put up there would just be put a bit of tungsten in orbit and deorbit it to hit the ground. Especially as there is so much that could go wrong with a space based delivery system compared to just throwing solid matter at cities. It should even be noted that this weapon wouldn't be against the letter of the treaty, even if it did violate the spirit, as the treaty specifically names NBCs.

But of course MAD has always been more about appearance of power rather than actual power, as the whole point is not to need to use it in the first place.
