Yeah, they're stretching the meaning of "private" by implying that because in the technical dichotomy of public vs. private Discord servers, these are often set to private. However, the only real difference is whether or not they're discoverable in "Discord Discovery," a public directory where people can join without invite links.

Private servers can still have freely public invites which allow anyone and everyone, and there's no reasonable expectation of traditional privacy. In fact, considering these servers operate and advertise their invites in children's spaces, they have a higher ethical burden of transparency. The only true reason to conceal their participation in these communities is to prevent people from monitoring their conduct with these minors.

I'm afraid not. As said by @JesusChristDenton, they got a rough location and some other accounts minus8 was operating, along with some information about his past deeds. The "operation", as they called it, lasted quite a while but unfortunately didn't yield solid results, if I remember correctly. There may have been developments since then, but it was abandoned back when I last checked. I wish he were thoroughly phonebooked too.
