For a long time I've had an idea in my head for a story and instead of perfecting the fine art of novel writing and trying to get that story published I got another idea after seeing that the "RPG Maker" on steam made a new version of RPG Maker MV. Does anyone have experience with this? I used the previous version years ago and it had some limitations. Mainly I'm asking about stock images since the story I have is set in America and not in Asia or a fantasy setting so I'm unsure if I can make it happen before buying it on steam.

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding your question: No, the stock art in MV isn't any less fantasy-related than the previous versions. There's a face creator in it now so you could probably finegle some normal-looking people together but it will be crude using just the default assets.

If you like limitations, a fully patched-up copy of RPG Maker 2003 patched with Maniac Patch can do wonders. It adds many functions for doing arithmetic, custom sprites and so much more. RM2K3's scripting engine is already pretty good compared to XP and up, with this patch it rivals the newer engines in terms of capabilities. Of course having plugins means you have a very flexible engine, MV works using javascript which is way more common than ruby

Do any other Kiwis use Hammer or Hammer ++? I was considering creating a dedicated thread just for source engine map making, Sorry if this the wrong thread for this.

Do you actually have ideas for gameplay? Only asking since you said you had an idea for a novel. Why not just do a visual novel and use a free engine like Ren'Py? RPG Maker is beginner friendly but still is gonna require a lot of work. If you don't have cohesive ideas for gameplay that would actually be good/make sense, then literally just download Ren'Py. It uses Python and it's extremely easy to use and is actually pretty customizable all things considered.

If you want to expand MV specifically, you can buy Yanfly's set of plugins that expand the hell out of the engine and gives you all kinds of features you can only dream about. They're pretty easy to use and there's a lot of support for them online, including full on video setup guides from the authors.
The Full Set of plugins for MV is like 30 bucks or something ridiculously dirt cheap.

There would be a combat component hence RPG maker.

My experience with MV was back in 2016 when I hammered two games and posted in some RPG maker website due to being a teenager that got inspired by playing Medieval Cop.

In terms of plugins: Yanfly's is unbeatable. the amount of things you can do due to how much he has written for the engine is staggering. Although I have ALOT of gripes with him due to the drama back then, and what made the RPG maker community shatter in a paywalled beast due to him, his plugins are still good for use.

When it comes to assets within the engine, they are... passable to say the least. but they are very anime oriented and medieval lined, so no, you will need to either start spriting yourself, or comission an artist to do the art for you. There's also the main website that you could go to if you want some assets made by the community that does not steal from you:

if you want to have less work when making your game, I recommend using the perspective of DQ, it saves alot on the art you would need to have.

I got Libresprite for image editing, exported some base sprites since that program can draw better than the hackjob I drew initially. For character clothes I used the tuxedo setting and recolored it to look like jeans and a jacket.

I apologize for the necro, but I was thinking about making a thread about this but chose to follow nettiquite and search first.

I really enjoy making RPG Maker games, though my main project was in VX Ace. I had started with the crappy pirated RPG Maker 2000 "Don Miguel" hack in 2001 or so, and got VX in 2011. Then VX Ace came in 2012, and I really enjoyed it, though some of the more complex combat features were nuked.

In VX, enemies could be weaker or stronger against different weapon types. So, you could make a skeleton that was strong against swords and spears, weak against maces, etc. VX Ace dropped that.

I spent quite some time making a rather long game by RPG Maker standards and even foolishly put it on steam.

It would be quite an amusing project to make a "LOLcow" game though as a minor footnote cow that posts mostly in his own thread, I would not be the best for anything other than maybe the battle engine or some event logic, which I am decent with.

MV is better if you want something that can be used anywhere. VX Ace and earlier will only work on Windows PCs, and even then, it's like 640x480, or some slightly worse resoluton with the same aspect ratio. A modern computer will have a rather small window for it or awkward full screen strecthing.

They used to be free until the author got greedy had a spatout over usage and decided to put them behind a paywall. Here, some guy managed to save them, you can get them for free: https://github.com/Ippang/Yanfly-Engine-Plugins-MV

Oh shit, I know there's the FOSSIL plugin to adapt RPG Maker MV plugins to MZ but I need to see if the Visustella Core engine plugin custom stats derived from other stats still works?
