What will sicken me about the series is that troons and troon chasers like Moviebob are going to relentlessly bully and attack the child actors who did nothing wrong.

I can’t imagine what the little kid who’s playing Harry on the show is going through now. Having to deal with idiot troons and leftists and being compared to Daniel Radcliffe must be a burden for the kid.

I want the best for these kids because they don’t deserve to be put up with idiots like Moviebob.

She also I think expected Rowling to say that she was inspired by Earthsea or only could have done it because of her pacing the way and when she didn't got snotty. Similar thing with Pratchett and Discworld. The fact is that Rowling I don't think ever was much of a fantasy reader and also wasn't from the wanky academic creative writing tradition, and so didn't spend her interviews sucking off the rest of the British fantasy world like they desperately felt she should.

Some background on the topic: Screenshot_20240812-124932_Tumblr.jpg Screenshot_20240812-124939_Tumblr.jpg Screenshot_20240812-124945_Tumblr.jpg Screenshot_20240812-124954_Tumblr.jpg Screenshot_20240825_084113.jpg

Whoever this person is, they completely misread Pratchett's beliefs about himself and his views on Rowling. He never attacked her or her choice of inspirations. His letter to the Times, often cited as an attack because of how it was misrepresented in a BBC article, was written to criticise journalists. He said as much himself. He was confused that she didn't think she was writing fantasy, but his ire was reserved for the journalists interviewing her, who seemed to take a great pride in how superficial and ignorant they were about fantasy writing, and perhaps books in general.

Pretty sure LeGuin was just a salty bitch about her own boy-goes-to-wizard-school novels not being appreciated the way she wanted. She raged at her publisher for the cover art and shat all over the tv adaptation of A Wizard of Earthsea. She had a lot of unconcealed bitter emotions around how that series was marketed and received.

Most adaptations are. It's no secret what happens to most books that get turned into tv, especially then. Either take the Micheal Caine Jaws IV approach and cash the check with a smile or don't sell the rights. Or use your clout like a certain other author did and insist you be given contractually guaranteed veto power over the casting and script.

I know she's a legend, but everybody told me to start with a short story that I found so contrived and morally facile that I've reflexively loathed her for years.

I don't care how great her body of work was, that story is the most Ana Mardoll flavored thing I've ever read.
I haven't read everything Le Guin has written, but I did like the Wizard of Earthsea series. However, it is massively different in tone and plot to HP. I seriously doubt JKR got any inspiration from Le Guin.

I've always put down Le Guin books thinking about the themes more than the plot. It's been a long time since I've read Book 1, A Wizard of Earthsea, but I recall some stuff about sacrifice and loneliness. Book 2, Tombs of Atuan is very much about faith and belief and the corresponding lack thereof. Book 3, The Farthest Shore is about death and memory. Book 4, Tehanu, is about aging and regrets and healing from trauma. (Also, it's my favorite of the series. ) The stories feel lonely; there are only a few characters in most of the adventures and the world is desolate and empty. They would never make good movies or tv shows.

Contrast that with HP where there are not only a core group of three friends, but also multiple characters from each House, ghosts with personalities and whole branches of Magical Government. Very different in every way except they both have wizards who go to school.

Of Le Guin's other works, I enjoyed Left Hand of Darkness and its exploration of gender roles. It's well-done speculative fiction and channels Cold War espionage paranoia. (I also feel compelled to mention The Player of Games by Iain M Banks, which is a completely unrelated book that nevertheless has similar Lone Fish in Hostile Pond vibes plus has moments of actual humor too.)

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas is all Heavy-Handed Message and nothing else interesting, I don't blame anyone for disliking it or losing interest in Le Guin if that's one's only exposure to her writing.

Lolcow Kyle "Katelyn" Burns has an episode of his podcast about Harry Potter.

At 9m in they rant about people who didn't consent to being lectured about Hogwarts Legacy.
Later in the video (27m30s) , one of them mentions a trans character in Hogwarts Legacy, whose name they all know and they agree that the character is clumsy tokenism.
It's pretty obvious that all 3 have played it.

These people!

I saw this posted on The Onion's official tumblr and thankfully people are pushing back are in the replies.

Ironically, the official Onion tumblr account blocked/muted/hide a lot of replies, so they're definitely aware of how it may come off.

The whole article is actually... uhhh... yeah. I don't mean to sound like a tumblr tard but it's blatant with woman not sucking tranny cock = bad and evil.

If it was written by a right-wing guy about a woman, these people would definitely riot and scream ma-soggy-knee.
But it's JKR so it's funny.
She deserves it.

Thank you for the live archive, I am sure The Onion will try to pretend it didn't happen i

Here are some tumblr replies pushing against it, just for posterity.

The * = The original comment was talking about how JKR is a victim of black mold toxicity, and that's why the article said she was "going insane"/in an asylum when it wasn't mentioned in the article at all.

The Queen Elizabeth thing is funny since the most ridiculous example of raving lunacy JK Rowling might say is stuff the British media is, in reality, doing to the other Queen Elizabeth.
ITV is said to be planning a new period drama exploring whether Queen Elizabeth I was transgender - with insiders warning it's 'guaranteed to anger viewers'.

Bosses have been looking for 'actors who identify as transgender women' to play the role of the Tudor royal in the series, which will be set in the court of her father, King Henry VIII, according to reports.

This is so tragic. I'm guessing the Onion hired a tranny at some point and the comedy drained out of it like the juice from a punctured grape.
It's actually way worse. They put Ben fucking Collins in charge. Even if I didn't think he was a complete fraud and a scumbag as a so-called journalist, he's just a very humorless, preachy person and a horrible fit for The Onion, at least in theory. It had gone to shit long before he became CEO.
Though they did in fact hire a tranny who has a thread right here: Tyler Sternbach

These people don't know how to observe anything without first comparing it to something. I can't imagine how exhausting it must be to live like this.
