"Real, gritty diversity" has changed so much in the last 25 years, so it kinda tracks, in a stupid way. A lot of those PBS and Nickelodeon shows had boys and girls of different backgrounds, not just ethnicity, either. These days there's this spotlight you have to put on everyone so that all traits are identities:

And I really do mean week to week, the pace of the discourse on social media is nothing like the monthly book club meetings of the late 90s. So no, they definitely can't write what they intend to write under these circumstances unless they pump out a bunch of topical crap like South Park trying to get the episodes out before everyone stops caring about the headlines from last week.

Definitely the second. With the first, he can tell himself that it was merely his laziness that cost him recognition and praise. Option 2 would inspire far more seething.

How arrogant do you have to be to put yourself up with Tolkien? I'm not even a huge fan of LOTR, but the amount of research and work he poured into those books is undeniably impressive.

Exactly! And those shows back then just treated the characters’ races, ethnicities, what have you as an afterthought 99% of the time. Hey Arnold is a good example I can think of at the moment. And something like Static Shock’s racism episode was handled more beautifully than any kids’ show that tries to do that shit nowadays.

I'm not into fantasy so I'm not a Tolkien guy but as you mentioned his research was impressive also the reason his books weren't "Gritty or Diverse" was Tolkien felt between the Romans and Normans the English lost a lot of their folklore and he was trying to create a modern English Folklore.

Well the latter group of troondorm theorists would need to find another topic, as we know the answer to this one. In one of the books (I think the fifth, but don't quote me on this), Harry and Ron are trying to get to the girl's dorm to tell Hermione something - just for the stairs to turn into a slide and the two falling right back into the common room. It was stated that boys can't reach the dorms, even though the girls can enter the boy's dorms.

Since the dormitories are sex segregated, troons would do a lot of slip'n sliding before setting up camp in a girls bathroom. That's just for the students though, it would be different if a teacher trooned out, but they have their own office anyway.

This is a genuinely good trick. I did try to find someone via dating app a while back and of course the "Female" section was crawling with entitled, ugly men. This is a staple of DEI writing (and living). People can't just have a different skin color or be gay or disabled or whatever, it needs to be central to every interaction and every situation ever. It’s overwritten and dull as you said. A mildly interesting idea dressed up in a lot of waffle. You can tell he had the idea of the twist first, then halfheartedly tried to hang a story on it. You could open AO3 a thousand times at random and find stories at a similar level- literate but uninteresting. As there was absolutely zero effort to establish the main character as a compelling or even realistic person I’m guessing the author is a massive autist. They kind of get what a story is structurally, but they don’t understand how to make it relatable and human.
Contrast that with the first line of Harry Potter where you understand exactly who the Dursleys are within a few words.
