The thing is that if someone were arrested for defending Stalin or Pol Pot or Hamas these same people would have been outraged. While outrage might be too strong a word for how I'd feel, I would still think that it was massive overstep by the government because as much as I would like to see actually, genuinely genocidal freaks to actually face some consequences, it is still their right to say whatever they want. Especially if they are citizens of the country arresting them (sorry, but non-citizens aren't afforded the same rights nor should they be). But that's because I actually have principles whereas these freaks are just trying to justify their evil behavior.
I loathe Noam Chomsky on every level, but he said one thing that I think was really well-put (even though he's been hypocritical about it throughout his embarrassment of a career)
If you believe in freedom of speech, you believe in freedom of speech for views you don't like. Goebbels was in favor of freedom of speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you're in favor of freedom of speech, that means you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise.

Oh, I have definitely seen proof. He hasn't really hidden it.

The crazy thing is he stood by her for years and refused to cut off his friendship with her, which got him more flack, and then he suddenly changed his tune after saying he wouldn't.

The only thing that makes me think it might not be Stephen is that he gets a lot of work, so it's not like not doing Harry Potter would hurt anything.
