Black Snape really is really fucking dumb, there are way more characters that they could have made black where it would have been fine, but no they took one where it was the least fitting.

Maybe WB thinks this will absolve them of funneling endless amounts of money into Rowlings pockets?

Yeah, they could have made Voldemort black.

Or Sirius? Sirius Black? Clues in the name!

I don't actually think WB really understands the whole issue.

This casting feels way more like some kind of black washing tokenism that would have been done in the 80s or early 90s.
Like when a random black friend is established as part of a friend group, even though said friend appears to be from an unrelated background to the main cast/group, with no real explanation as to why they are there, other than to be black.
Usually they probably would have been originally written as just one of the gang, but as no one was actually thinking about the color of the characters, then they wouldn't specifically think if one is black or not.
Either they would be used as a vehicle to "explore" storylines about racism and that was basically the extent of their character, or the fact they were black was never mentioned and their presence made even less sense.
JK pretty much did similar things in Harry Pothead in the first place anyway, Cho Chang and the Indian Twin girls were kind of shoehorned in, but again, getting back to the British boarding/public school environment, it was a tad more common then for kids of Hong Kong Chinese or moderately wealthy Indian extraction to go to those sorts of schools.
The girl who winds up being captain of the quidditch team, she was played by a black girl in the films and strongly implied to be west Indian in the books.

As for black Snape;
I am hoping that this is some kind of misdirection and this guy is actually playing a different character, but WB or JK thought it would be funny to troll audiences until the first episode.

Or, this guy actually winds up playing a pretty amazing Snape. It could happen!

It's slightly more complicated than that since there's additional factors in the casting choice.

They need it to be a character who is present in all seven books - out goes Dumbledore, Lupin, Sirius and most other characters
Has to be someone who's technically on team good by the end - out go the Malfoys, Voldemorte and all of Slytherin not removed by the prior one
Cannot be of below average intelligence - so long Hagrid
Has to be a prominent character - so long every Hogwarts teacher who's not Snape and all the Hogwarts students not already disqualified
Cannot race change existing minority characters - most of them are gone with the prior guidelines anyway

At this point you're down to Harry, Ron, Hermione and Snape.

Macgonagall would have been a perfect choice to be black'd if you absolutely must have those BLM brownie blackie points. I went to pretty diverse schools all my life, so I never personally feel like any level of diversity is unrealistic. Sure, British boarding schools in the 90s probably weren't very diverse, but they also didn't make you wear robes or have three headed dogs protecting magical artifacts from evil wizards, the wizarding world is clearly different.

Can tell that you went to Harrow rather than Eton then! ;)

Not prominent enough, she's a good character but her impact is too light to satisfy people demanding a more diverse cast.

Hermione being a posh little swot was exactly the kind of girl who would be putting loads of effort into a save the whales campaign and wouldn't shut up about it.
Pretty much everything I know about HP is from osmosis, since I never read the books nor watched the movies, but I definitely knew about that, and it's somewhat hilarious she was a parody of an SJW before they became formalized as a thing, obsessed with saving some minority group from oppression even though the minority group itself didn't want to be "saved" by some meddling do-gooder.

Toss on the irony of the actress who played her turning out to be exactly the topic of the parody.

It's funny how the only people in the cast of the movies who didn't turn out to be back-stabbing Judases to the person solely responsible for anyone even knowing their names were the actors who played villains.
Alan Rickman is so iconic as Snape — imo he fits better with the Snape in Rowling’s head than what she actually wrote on the page — that I don’t think it’s the worst idea to cast someone who looks completely different from him.
Alan Rickman was iconic at literally anything he did. He could belch and it would be the iconic belch.

Three guesses and all three count

Ironically, there's something similarly wrong with Azealia Banks and Kanye West. It's actually dark af. It's giving possessed. Like mounted by a demon tea.
"what’s truly looking like a psychiatric problem"

It's a lot more fun watching a crazy person yelling 'Look how crazy they are' when said crazy person isn't likely to end up living under a bridge.

A black Hagrid would've been interesting. They could've drawn parallels with the discrimination/racism he faced as a half giant. Then they could just handwave the intelligence criteria by saying he really was smart, but didn't get the opportunity to show it due to said discrimination/racism.

Also would've made it way easier to find an actor who can dwarf the kids without cgi :story: just hire an NBA player

Back in the #MeToo days I feel like liberals all agreed that jokes about domestic violence were beyond the pale. They must be so glad that troonery became mainstream enough that they can make those jokes again.

Oh wow, this oughta win normal people back.
This all started about because Rowling made an offhand joke about how "people who menstruate" used to be called "women". If trannies had just managed to be normal about that then it would probably would have blown over without incident. Instead, they inundated her with threats of rape and murder. Their instinct is always to lash out as hard as possible against any slight. They have this very black and white psuedoreligious worldview where anyone who isn't 100% on their side is a Nazi who wants to do literal genocide to them.

Even if you didn't read the books, or hell, even watch the movies, a simple cursory glance at the material would tell you that making Snape black is a terrible idea.

I mean he isn't even dumb in the actual sense, he is clearly very skilled as a Gamekeeper and can do Nonverbal spells with the remnants of a wand.

He is just a terrible decisionmaker due to his emotions, making him black would put him too close to the noble savage trope.

Plus he is technically half human
