You seem to misunderstand some things. These standards of masculinity aren't that anymore if nobody respects them anymore. Being able to hold down a job isnt really a gender/sex/creed thing. Outside of the uber disabled and the mentally ill (and even them most of them can do something productive) the inability to hold down a job marks one out universally as a loser regardless of race, creed or made up gender.

What's funny to me is that he talks about the dissolution of the Comics Code Authority as if it's a bad thing, and he's a libertarian (or at least has libertarian leanings), so wouldn't he see less restrictions on artistic freedom as a good thing?
