The Olympics are being held in Rio de Janeiro this year and already things are off to a rocky start. The stadium is expensive as hell to build (as they all are), the expense and pressure around hosting it is straining Brazil's already fragile political system, and Zika virus is obviously a huge issue, particularly with the revelation it's sexually transmitted. Also, they shot a jaguar for some reason.
The Olympics in general seem to be a piss poor investment, but are for some reason are a major dick waving contest between countries so we end up investing a ton of money into something that's briefly newsworthy but ultimately probably not that good of an idea.

How about that World Cup Qatar is hosting? Isn't it supposed to be pretty much too hot to even play soccer?

I think it's really dumb that they keep hosting these huge sporting events (not just the Olympics, but also things like the World Cup) in developing countries. It's an open secret that the cities that host these events are almost always left worse off than they were before. However, cities that already have the infrastructure and venues to support a major sporting event can make money... too bad the IOC and FIFA tend to (as in always) pick cities with the most ambitious plans for custom-built facilities. Custom-built facilities that are used only once and then are abandoned because they're completely impractical. This article explains it well:

To be fair, though, it's not just the IOC or the FIFA. Many of these developing countries compete against other developed countries to win the bid for hosting the Olympics/World Cup.

You see, there is this old mentality that some leaders have: Use a world-class event to showcase the might of one's country. MANY politicians have done it. Brazilians, under Lula, really did see themselves as the new members of the developed countries club by 2016 (Back in 2009). They made sure they won the bid back then.

Are there any big archives of former Olympic grounds as abandoned wrecks? These look cool so far.

I think they are holding it during the cooler months (for them) also the big issue is Qatar is a slaver state. Another thing that will be interesting is if FIFA will get enough pressure from Budweiser to force stadiums to sell beer like they did in Brazil. Oh, and also the close proximity to Islamist organizations and the Yemeni war

And, of course, five seconds after the bid ended, so did any efforts in improving the country.

I don't know really.
Everyone said the world cup would be a disaster and they quoted dengue and the protests as the reason and also something about delayed public works, a water drought in São Paulo, etc.
It still went fine and it was much larger than the Olympics.

I wouldn't call spending money on stadiums used for 4 games fine. Especially since the big reason nations host is to boost tourism and put their cities in the world stage. That was the excuse when they bring the G20 to a city, and they all turn to cluster fucks

It was a political move.
The governor's ,senators and congressmen lobbied to their states to house some of the games.
The same ones are now being investigated for receiving kickbacks from the construction companies that built the stadiums.

I thought this thread was us nominating @Rio for President. Make Sweden Great Again

On the actual topic at hand...

Doesn't Brazil have one of the highest gaps between rich and poor? Favela slums are pretty much iconic with the country.
Why would the Brazilian government spend money to help it's citizens by promoting job growth and public services when they could just pocket some of the money they don't give to their cronies who own the contractors? :sighduck:

It's probably South America's last chance for pretending like they set up some form of civilization until the 2030s.

Qatar wasn't "let's let some poor country host it". Qatar was bog standard corruption. FIFA officials who had voting bids were paid off by the Qatari royal families. As most previous world cup hosting bids were. It was part of the massive scandal that FIFA has basically just ignored despite the FBI arresting half of them.
