I suspect AT&T's endgame is to scale down the publishing arm of DC to the point where it consists of Mark Waid, imprisoned SIMS-style inside a windowless, door-less room, screaming "Fix this now!" at the walls. This will be the new model for the comic book industry going forward.

As much as I would pay money to watch that happen, I think sadly it is not in the cards. Waid is way too expensive to keep on, unless you think they are planning to do that snuff-movie-style. Heck, everyone is too expensive to keep on at DC now.
They cancelled basically everything and virtually everyone is fired.
The only people left are basically interns on well below subsistence salaries, that are ad-hoc promoted to be full editors.
Creators are panicing because the new "editors" tell them they don't know what htey are supposed to do. Even telling the creative artists that they, the "editors" don't even know who they report to.

The unwinding is going very rapidly now that they have basically fired basically everyone and cancelled basically every project.

At the end of this, which will not be many months out, DC Comics will basically be a filing cabinet with various IP and a single guy, part time, that once a quarter goes through and signs licencing deals when other
companies/publishers/fans/... want to create an official batman comic/toy/bag/t-shirt/...

That is the future of DC Comics. One guy, working a day or two once a quarter to do things like "Oh, you want to make an official SuperMan t-shirt? Ok, we want 1000$ upfront and 10% of all sales."

That he did and after self proclaimed activist Daniel Cherry came on board.
I assume Daniel Cherry is still there since hes pretty high up right?

So anything Waid would be working on is cancelled?

It's worth taking note that all of a sudden Marvel, and to a lesser extent DC, are suddenly calling on a bunch of old school 80's, 90's and 00's creators that had been largely ignored and blacklisted by the Pink Haired Mafia. Louis Simonsen, Fabien Niescia (sp?), and even Waid. While such modern illuminaries as Tom King are getting publicly ass blasted by the remaining editorial staff. They are suddenly desperate to recapture that 90's magic. It's of course too little too late, as we are seeing with DC.

Oh and for those that missed it. Waid is not "too expensive". Waid is one of the few old timers alongside Dan Slott that has been working steadily, without being cast off by the PHM. That tells you the most important thing about them. They're fucking cheap.

Or they know where the bodies are buried.

Daniel Cherry is still there. His job as General Manager is to unwind and shutdown DC Comics in an orderly fashion.
That is his assignment.

Anything anyone is working on is cancelled, or will be.
They have already fired every single editor (and have replaced them with a handful of very cheap interns, for now).
There are no plans on publishing any thing that the contracted artists are working on right now. They have no editors.

Let me repeat this one more time. They are a publisher. This last week they literally fired every single editor!
There is not even anyone around that has authority to approve new publications any more.

Artists are rushing to send in as much of the work they are contracted on, in whatever form it is, so that they can be paid before they shut down. Who cares if it is shoddy work or rushed. Everyone knows that whatever they are sending in will never be published anyway.
Rumours are that the plans are that in January the next round of layoffs will happen and by June 1, at the latest, all of the comic book print publishing will have ended.

Necroing the thread a little but I have seen a few cases where people got brought in as the organisation/company was either changing or imploding. One case where the person's job was completely different after being brought on. I get that vibe with Waid going back to DC.

Lets be honest. Waid as a comic writer looks good next to such DC luminaries as. Tom King. Like Waid might be viewed as a move back towards quality. Plus he works much cheaper than Geoff Johns or Jim Lee.

On John's he took his creator owned work Geiger to image comics... https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbr.com/image-geoff-johns-gary-frank-geiger/amp/ it feels like a setup for a show. Hell it looks like John's is getting off the ship while waid is jumping on the Titantic as it hits the iceberg.

That's a good point, writers are good for more than writing fiction. They might be bringing back the old hands as editors or managers to evaluate and organize their back catalog.

While you can argue his abilities or competencies at any of these positions, Waid's worn a lot of hats in the comic biz: writing, editing, continuity guy, general "fixer", CCO, editor-in-chief, and I think he may have even been a publisher at some point. So having him on as a general "do everything we don't have people to do anymore" guy could well be the plan. Particularly if he's much cheaper than similarly qualified people, which he probably is.

Some hesitamce in calling King bad. I would've said 'Good within a narrow range (Vision, Omega Men etc), awful otherwise' but his Walmart Superman story was both really good and nothing like his other work. He's laid a lot of turds tho.

Remember when it looked like Hickman was going to jump ship and start with Legion of Superheroes? If only, if only...

Waid is a riddiculous manchild incapable of acting like an adult and it is my severe hope that Richard Meyer slaps him across the face with his massive veiny 14" dick and gets a judgement against him for multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars just in time for the entire comic book industry to collapse in on itself..

Then Richard can go back to doing what waid will never do..... Fathering more children with ethnic women.
