Speaking of Max Payne I can't get either of part 1 or 2 to work on Steam. I've checked the forum and nothing. I thought "Okay, I have a new rig with new video card and everything. Maybe it'll work?" And used my $5 Steam credit to grab part 2 and it refused to launch.

Is absolutely nothing happening when you launch it? Maybe go into the folder where it's installed and right click the .exe, click properties and then go into the compatibility tab. Set it to XP compatibility and "run as administrator", or one but not the other if that doesn't work. Start by clicking directly on the exe.

Now I get application load error 5:0000065434

So disappointing when companies refuse to patch old games.

Weird thing is that I played Max Payne 2 in ~2018, but instead of digging out my discs and dealing with cd-key bullshit I pirated a cracked version. And fiddle around with compatibility settings most likely, it's something I do by default on old games before even trying to start them.
Have you checked pcgamingwiki?

The thing that really stood out to me when playing it was that it was waaaaay longer than I remember it. When it was released I finished it in 1½ sitting and then started complaining about how it's bullshit that modern games are so god damn short yet they ask you to pay full price for them. Some things never change...
Playing it in 60 minute sessions stretched over two weeks makes the game feel long, who could have imagine that.

The fan patch on that site worked. Thanks!

Even though I’m not the only one, I still think playing the old PSP and PS2 is still a treat.
My birthday is coming up soon, so I’ll just save to get those two, and probably an NES (or SNES), or a Famicon in late spring.
If you are looking to get them to play games rather than collecting I'd suggest PCSX2 and PPSSPP instead. Both run well on pretty much any modern PC. PPSSPP will run on pretty much any modern phone so get yourself a Bluetooth controller and go nuts.
