Hundreds of miles of randomly generated world and dungeons, IIRC.

Yeah, it's one of the few games that has a world the literal size of its map, instead of like 20~30 square miles you're supposed to pretend is a lot bigger. That being said, the fact that so much of it is procedurally generated can be a turnoff. That also being said, I love getting lost in that shit.

The only thing I legit don't like about Daggerfall (and this goes for most of the early first-person real time RPGs that borrowed from Ultima Underworld's control scheme) is having to drag the mouse to swing your weapon, and that's a nitpick.

Yeah that can be a pain in the ass. You can at least change it to a modern wasd mouse-camera setup but the melee weapon controls are unavoidable as far as I know.

Phantasy Star (3rd one was a little bit of let down, but the 4th fixed it) and Shining Force series. Also, I recommend to check Beyond Oasis. But if you prefer 3D-games, then play Gothic 1-2, NOT 3 AND NOT ARCANIA, THEY ARE SHIT.

Heroes of might and magic. Either 2 or 3.

Still fun to this day. Especially if you can get a buddy or two to play a Hotseat against a bunch of AI's

Not to mention the fucking soundtrack.

That music got me so pumped up every time I played that game.

Yuzo still DJs the soundtrack at clubs, that how timelesss it is

The first is amazing for its time and if you have grid paper or a map for the 1st person dungeons the game can be enjoyable. The Second I recommend a patch for easier leveling and money as that game is a bit grindy and that game needs a map for the dungeons since they are too similar and confusing. The third is a black sheep but the setting of the game is pretty cool. The fourth is a masterpiece and the best RPG on the Genesis.

I'll go a newer-ish title and I mean it was early 200o's but the two Victorious Boxers/Hajime no Ippo games on the PS2 because I've yet to find another boxing game as hard but not broken as those two were, each fight felt like a war and not having any heath or stamina meters added a extra level of critical thinking.

So out of nowhere a friend wanted to play Neverwinter Nights, I let him dl it off my GoG and it spiraled out of control into me hosting an Infinite Dungeons server for myself and 3 friends on NWN: Enhanced Edition. Good times though.

Glad to see so much interaction in this thread.

So classical PC adventure games continued. The Monkey Island series is a great series which has had quite a few updates and revitalization over the years but is a great example of the SCUMM machine and how well it worked as Sierra's competitor for point and click formats. Additionally the humor in most of these earlier games is excellent, so in addition to the 2 monkey islands, try Day of the Tentacle, and Zack McKraken.

Outside of that the absolute hidden gem of the Sega Saturn is a platforming/fighting/rpg game called Dark Savior, it was an unofficial sequel to Landstalker and kept the best aspects of the platforming and fighting aspects of that game, as well as being an early adopter of the 3d platformer. The game is excellent in the terms of replayability with five different parallel streams that the story can fall into depending on your early success at the beginning of the game, the best ones story line wise are parallels two, three & four.
If you own a Saturn or have access to an emulator it is definitely one to play, it was Saturn exclusive which is why its relatively unknown outside.

I burned Dark Savior and been meaning to play it as I love Landstalker as its my favorite Zelda like on the Genesis. Landstalker was supposed to get a remake on the PSP but it was cancelled. Like Shining Force series, I am never going to get a great new game from a loved Sega series.

Bladerunner (1997) (PC) - REALLY great point-and-click game that has its own independent story running alongside the events of the movie. The story runs in real-time and there are quite a few endings.

Vagrant Story (PS1) - Combat feels like a jankier Parasite Eve but one of the most graphically impressive games for the system.

Harvester (PC) - Half-joking, but it’s one of the most fucked-up and surreal retro point-and-click games I’ve ever played. Worth picking up once and never playing again.
