Nothing related to the massive cash grab known as Shadows of the Empire came close to living up to the hype.

The fact that there was no way to get the full story from any single item was a major piss-off to a lot of people, and the fact that there was even a “soundtrack” CD was totally ridiculous.

I could go into detail about how cynical the whole thing was, but I’ve got too much of a headache right now.

I thought it was a fun game at the time. The Hoth level alone was generational and inspired Rogue Squadron so that was a major win.

I remember seeing tv ads for this when it came out and it was marketed like it was going to be a massive title. Then I remember playing it and it just felt pretty generic. It was pre prequel movies so maybe any new Star Wars titles were really hyped and sort after back then.

The lead-up to the Special Edition releases of the original trilogy had massive fan hype, people were stoked to have more Star Wars.

Shadows shit the bed because, in order to get the whole story, you had to read a novel, two comic series (one of which was exclusive to 2-packs of action figures) and play a video game.

It didn’t help that the story was bad and the game had you playing as some nobody instead of the heroes everyone loved.

Just curious, what would you all say are the most underrated games on the N64?
Some of the 2D puzzle games on the system aren’t exactly obscure, but I’d say under-appreciated.
  • Dr. Mario 64 is easily the best Dr. Mario, and it’s the second - and last - entry to be released as a standalone physical game and not a cheaper download-only or 2-in-1 with some other game to justify the price.
  • Magical Tetris Challenge is a solid Tetris. It got PS1 and GBC ports later but was originally N64 and arcade, with the arcade version using N64-based hardware.
  • Pokemon Puzzle League is arguably the best Puzzle League if you can put up with (or even better, like) the overall cheesiness of 4Kids dubbing, copy-pasted anime art, comic sans, and shameless MIDI music. Or play Pokemon Puzzle Challenge on GBC if you just want the SNES Tetris Attack with a Pokemon theme.
  • Or if you want a 3D puzzler, there’s also the N64-exclusive Tetrisphere.

A video on that game literally just appeared in my YouTube feed a few minutes ago. It looks really fun from what I’ve seen. Also, I didn’t know that there was N64-based arcade hardware. How many games used that hardware that you know of?

I think just 13, and Magical Tetris Challenge is one of the only noteworthy ones. If you get a flashcart, there are conversions that I’m pretty sure can be played on a stock N64.

I actually did hear about that one. It was made by the Sly Cooper people, right?
Yes, and they initially pitched it to Nintendo, and it is rumoured that they would likely have gotten a deal for at least that game, but Miyamoto vetoed it. Not sure if there's any truth to that, but given a lot of other stories about him being a twat to other devs, it wouldn't shock me.

Hello. I was looking for something that coukd emulate handhelds uo to the 3DS. Might this work?

I get multitasking is a thing, but was this really necessary?

Nintendo published a lot of games on the N64 themselves that wouldn't have had publishers otherwise including at least one basketball game and the localization of Mischief Makers. The one game they were going to publish and then backed out of was Body Harvest, because they apparently had disagreements with DMA Design over it. I wonder if DMA was going to bring GTA to Nintendo but they told them off and ended up on losing on one of the biggest franchises of the 6th generation.

This is something that isn't discussed enough. My concentration is almost completely ruined because of simultaneously doing multiple things on my PC for years and even I've never gone this far. Don't play a game WHILE watching a video on another screen. That's just ridiculous.

If you have a kid, for God's sake, limit their phone use. I just looked through my window and saw a group of 10 teenagers walking down the street. 4 of them were looking at their fucking phones.
