Maybe a newish iPhone would do?
There's a weird retarded thing where Apple won't allow JIT compiling on iOS, so Dolphin does technically exist on it, but is a no-go. iPhones right now don't feasibly go past PSP.

What machines are people using as cheap emulation boxes these days? I'm looking for something that can emulate gamecube and PS2.
My current emulation machine is a Steam Deck I hook up to my TV with a cheap USB-C hub that has a power passthrough and HDMI.

Even the weakest (post Steam Deck) x86 handhelds will handle the 6th generation without trouble, not to mention the PC versions of these games if available. Why these instead of mini PCs? Because the second-hand market is full of people chasing the next shiny thing and throwing away their old stuff for peanuts. Handhelds are both cheaper and more powerful than mini PCs of the same price bracket.

If I'm right to assume that by "box" you mean a couch/bed setup, then a word on the UX: if you don't have or don't want a controller-friendly UI, get a minikeyboard like the ones by Rii. You'll want a real mouse and keyboard for the installation process, but once your install is ready you'll be happy to have these gadgets to streamline the 101 of launching games/media from a couch.

Bonus point: you can (duh) unplug them and play handheld. Good luck doing that with a "box".
Double bonus point: when you're not playing or watching movies, they are still decently powerful backup computers for whatever else you would want a PC for.

I first had a Steam Deck, went through a few others, now settled on an MSI Claw 7 (LNL). Even the Steam Deck handled PCSX2 and Dolphin at 1080p+ReShade, which should tell you "something that can emulate PS2 and GameCube" has been a solved problem for years.

I use Win11, Linux is also an easy choice especially the SteamOS copycats. I wouldn't really recommend Android except maybe the Odin line because their software is not too bad with docked play, but we're back to square one where a handheld PC of the same price will be infinitely more functional.

Wow, I had no idea the situation was so grim. iPhones are so neutered, it's unreal.

And yet, Chinese prefer them because Chinese brand phones like Huawei and Xiaomi suck. Do Chinese gamers even use emulators on either their phones or computers, or does the Great Firewall lockdown discussion of such topics to the point of emulation being even more niche?

Come buy a Switch 2, we have:
  • Bad Mario Kart
  • Bad ports of old games, full price
  • Star Fox 64, again
  • New controllers with the same problems as the old ones and no new features (Sorry, no cross-compatibility)
  • No OLED options yet because we can make our customers double-dip in a few years
  • Some kind of Pokemon-themed Animal Crossing thing
  • The opportunity to buy fancy new MicroSD cards (your old ones won't work)
  • Virtual Console, except now it's a yearly subscription. Make sure to buy the more expensive tier so you can play twenty-year old games as opposed to just thirty-year old games
  • Some of your old games are enhanced except oh whoopsies that'll be another ten buckeroos buddy
Add to the list
  • New Metroid game that’s been hyped up for 8 fucking years. It was so shit it didn’t break a Million per console
  • Supposedly a new Fire Emblem game aping Three Houses instead of creating a completely new world
  • Potentially a “new” Super Smash which is basically “Switch 2 version” for Ultimate featuring Miles Mackenzie please be real this shit would be so fucking funny

I thought Prime 4 was okay. Prime 1-3 were more engaging to me though.

I also ordered some more N64 titles, just in case anyone cares.
- Wave Race 64
- Diddy Kong Racing
- Perfect Dark (no Expansion Pak yet though)
- Snowboard Kids
- Puyo Puyo Sun 64
- Bomberman Hero (US version)
- MRC: Multi-Racing Championship

The vast majority of games that exist are not chinese, so there's not really much of a reason for the party line to even have an opinion about such things. i would think it's just considered to be a programming curiosity. like people surely are doing it and talking about it of their own volition but i don't think there's a culture of it like there is in the west or even in japan

e: there's tons of chinese emulator handhelds and companies in hindsight so i think they just do it that way

Perfect Dark is such a good game. I think I liked it as much as Golden Eye.

Some other games you could try:

F-Zero X
Blast Corps
Rogue Squadron
