I like the way a tape feels going into a VCR. There are people reading this who have never put a tape in a VCR. Would they go, "Wow that feels really cool" if they put a tape in a VCR or would the physical act of doing so be meaningless to them?

Like, yes, I like putting Mario 64 into my N64 and seeing the logo instantly flash up on the screen, way more than booting into it in an emulator but that's probably only because I did it when I was 12.

You mentioned specific console earlier and I didn't own a PC Engine or play Rondo until I was in my 20s.

Now it's physical at all? I don't really know how to answer that one. I will say my own kids like playing with my old consoles. If I were loading them on a computer or a chinese handheld or a complicated all-in-one fpga/emulation thingy I doubt it would land the same way.

You can put a game* on an NFC card and have a MiSTer load into the game a few seconds after it’s powered on. Combine that with some sticker labels and an NFC reader that looks like a card slot and, well obviously it’s not a literal cartridge but it is “physical media”.

* technically you’re putting a file path on the NFC card which is then read to load a rom off an SD card but whatever

The art work and boxes is the main appeal of physical for me. I love how many games in the 3rd/4th gen used hand drawn illustrations, Super famicom games have some of the prettiest box art's out there.

You can connect a Wiimote to your PC with bluetooth. If your PC doesn't have bluetooth built into it then you can buy a bluetooth USB dongle for like $12. Dolphin emulator can handle the rest, you just need to check the right controller settings, google it and you'll find it. If the game needs you to point at the screen then you can buy a USB infrared bar for like $8, or you can find some other trick to have infrared lights to point at.

Three games. The last THREE Star Fox games have been some form of remake of 64, which was itself a retelling of the original game’s story. Modern Nintendo is a fucking travesty.

They've been rehashing the same shit since the early 90s. Zelda III was just Zelda I with a few more abilities, Super Metroid was just more Metroid and it all just gets more repetitive and more redundant from there at an accelerating pace.

Super Metroid and Link to the Past were dramatic improvements over their NES counterparts. There's only so much you can do before you start getting into diminishing returns, though, and retelling the Star Fox story at least for the third time now gets tiring.

Sorry, but thanks to the magic of instant rewind, I am finally able to finish my ever-increasing backlog of retro games. I have nothing to prove to anyone, so whatever, call me a cheating bitch all you want.
Save states are only for special occasions, like an urgent matter that needs to be attended to in real life and I'm far from a save point, or the game has no save feature anyway.

I asked above about the Wii emulation methods for that same reason. I'm very busy with work commitments to set up my Wii at home and use it on the regular, but I still plan to use it for more specific stuff like Wii Fit and such.

There are 2 kind of sequels, the ones that completely revolutionize bastardize gameplay/story and "oh great, more of X".
What did you wanted from super metrioid or Zelda aLttP? To be a 3d open world with light crafting, quests and towers? Maybe with turn-based combat?

Haven't played that one or those two Puyo Puyo games. Might have to check them out. And yes, the N64 I ordered has a region-free cartridge tray to allow both US and JP titles to be played.

Speaking of which, I also ordered a few interesting titles that I've heard good things about.
- Mario Kart 64
- Star Fox 64
- GoldenEye 007
- Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (JP version, as it was cheaper)

Just wanted to start with a small amount for now.
 
My brain just reminded me of that time my father managed to beat a game on the amiga, looked around for a while and discovered the title and that it was an arcade game.

This game is pretty nice. I think it’s also on NES and Game Boy.
