Anyone have any experience with the Chinese knockoff carts you see on Alibaba and Ebay? I've been eyeing Doom 64, because the original goes for north of $50, you can pick up the knockoff for less than $20, and I really don't care as long as it works in my N64.

What are your experiences? Anyone get a cart that damaged your console or is that just a meme? Did you wake up one morning and your saves were gone? Did it work better than expected? Any favourite sellers? How about the Everdrive knockoffs? Anyone have experience with those?

I've bought a few knockoff SNES carts from I think it was Wish, and theyve all functioned pretty much flawlessly.
Nothing immediately comes to mind for issues, though I havent tried my Earthbound cart yet, as it came in just before I started moving. The only real thing I could think of worrying about are ones that require the CMOS batteries for save files and otherwise, but not sure on the N64 with any certainty.

Don't give those smelly chinks your heard earned money. If you're into retrogaming an N64 flashcart is a pretty good deal. 150 USD for the entire library plus homebrew.

But if you just wanna play Doom 64 there is already a really dope native PC port of it. No emulators required.

I have a very nice old Famicom multicart from back when they had some real weight to them, has a lot of different a good games like SMB2J and it's not just seventy Contras on a featherweight.
I've thought about getting a nice flash cart like I used to have for the GBA, but then I realize that I already have a wii with like, literally every fucking NES and FC rom ever and I never touch it, so meh.

Did... did you just unironically use the term 'dope'?

I ordered an ED64 a few years back and it got seized in customs and sent back for some reason. Kirkzz refunded me, so it's all good, but I have the say, the $50 N64 chink flash carts on Ali Baba are mighty tempting assuming they work reasonably well.

It's more about being able to smoke a doob after the kids are in bed and pretending it's the late 1990s and I'm in high school. Looks like a cool project though, I'll still check it out.

Dang, that sucks. From what I hear Krikzz makes good flashcarts. I've been dying to get one along with an N64 for years now. I'm actually fine with buying Chinese alibaba flash carts. It's the pirated game carts I'm not fond of. I'd especially be weary of buying any carts that have a save function, but a lot of that worry comes from all those late 90s bootleg pokeman carts that would either corrupt your saves or at best work for six months before crapping out. My childhood experience with Famiclone carts was fine but I'm 100% sure that none of those had a save function.

FYI I use it quasi-ironically because I like the way it sounds the same way I enjoy a lot of cheesy metal, but even if I did use it sincerely; so fucking what? You ran into a thread about video games to not only rate me autistic but took the time to make a comment about it, with the subtext being "Omg becky this guy is a total square! Gag me with a spoon!" This isn't middle school. Nobody cares how hip, happenin', or poppin' fresh you are.

Do you have a Doctor V64??? I used to have one for my N64, and I remember it was dope to borrow my friends' N64 games (they are not many, since most have PS1, but I have a PS1 too) and copy it to a cd and play it.
I knew a guy who did. Also one of the old 3.5 floppy cartridge things for the Genesis/Megadrive.

I have one of these silly bastards. Works just fine, though a lot of games on there use battery saves. This is a problem because the cart does have battery-backed SRAM, but doesn't have any kind of switching mechanism or flash storage or whatever, so even just starting another game that saves on a battery will wipe your save, making those games pointless. And that's a huge shame too because it even has fan translations like Sweet Home and Final Fantasy III.

But on the other side of the coin, it has some of the games that cost a million billion dollars that don't battery save anyway, as well as all the usual mainstays like all 6 Mega Man games and all the Super Mario games (except 2J).

So that one's good.

Though I've had like four different DS flashcards and all of them have eventually shit the bed, since apparently all of them have really poorly manufactured contacts that wear out after a few ejects. So, just, load up every game you'll ever want to play and don't take them out of your DS.

No clue about N64 games, though. It'd be nice if I could pick up a bunch I want like Ogre Battle 64 at decent prices. Or hell, if they can do single-game bootlegs, I'd love a big ol' multicart. The whole N64 romset is like 5gb 7zipped and 8gb microSDs cost like nothing now, surely they could do one of those.

I thought my flashcart missaligned my DS contact pins after a few years of use, then I thought it might be the flashcart crapping out. Turns out the cartridge connectors were just dirty. I put some isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and really rubbed the hell out of the connectors on my AceKard 2. Thing booted up and after cleaning works every time. I used to have to fiddle with and reseat it before it completely stopped working prior to the cleaning. Also just putting alcohol on there wasn't enough. It required some pressure. YMMV but it is certainly worth a shot.

I just ordered a chink N64 flashcart and a gameboy color one for the wife. Costed under $100. Hopefully they work. If not no big loss.

Doom 64 isn't a fifty dollar game unless you want it complete (and even then I doubt it.) As to flash carts, yeah they should work just fine, a bit expensive but they do allow you to play every game on an actual 64 so if that's your deal have at it.

edit: Holy shit, Doom 64 is up to almost 30 dollars on price charting, a forty percent or so rise over the last two years. Most games are actually trending down...

Sucks to hear that it got seized. Krizz is located in the Ukraine and when I got my first Everdrive I was suprised myself that I was able to get it. If you still want one, you can order everdrives from Amazon and Stone Age Gamer. I have everdrives for NES, SNES, Genesis, TG 16, and GBA and I recommend them over multicarts as the better quality, being able to put any game that the cart's firmware can support, and playing games that are hacked, translated, or unreleased. I might pick up the N64 one just to play that elusive Clayfighters 64 SC that I will never be able to buy.

Also on the subject, they make SD card slots for CD based consoles which I am really want to get for my Saturn and PS1. I think I just love modding systems as I like to play them.

(Doom64 was just announced as a Switch port as well)
