I used Reddit years ago just for browsing funny stuff and not reading comments, then at some point I stupidly started actually engaging with the users there. It didn't take long to realize how fruitless that was -- not in a moralizing "bah, why am I arguing with these fools" kind of way, but more of a "hold on, is this how I'm choosing to spend my time?"The part that always floors me about reddit is how much of a righteous moralfag everyone there is. I can't decide if the upvote system attracts people with this personality type or unsuspecting people get brainwashed to act like dorks for a dopamine hit. Upvotes were conceived of as a means of deciding which kitten pictures are the cutest and which stolen 4chan/SA memes are the funniest, not direct the flow of serious discussion.
Inevitably I switched to just using it for browsing cute animal photos and the occasional hobby subreddits that managed to stay apolitical, which is somehow a lot to ask for from the average moderator there. Even the fucking r/math sub did a "blackout day" for George Floyd if I remember correctly, serving no purpose and perplexing almost everyone.
They shut down the sub for a day, came back with a big post along the lines of "Heh. Bet you were wondering where the Math sub went for the last 24 hours," to which most people's reaction was somewhere between "it was gone?" and "what? why?"
