It'd definitely take a relationship and some sustained henpecking, although as a general aside, deliberately shocking women is a surprisingly effective way to make yourself appear interesting to them.

I remember Jay being somewhat dismissive of James around the time the AVGN movie came out. It made it seem like they're not on friendly terms, but who knows, maybe Space Cop's failure humbled him a little.
 
Unless it's someone they think outranks them for some reason, they always shit on them. They don't see James as better then or equal to them so he's not worthy of their praise. But they'll trip over themselves to praise Len Kabasinski and Leo Fong every chance they get despite ragging on their movies because they see them as "real" film makers that out rank them because their stuff predates youtube and exists on home media with actual distributors. Have RLM ever praised ANY youtube based media? I'm not recalling any. Their films arguably aren't much better but they've also never crowd funded so maybe that makes a difference. Who knows how much Space Cop cost to make vs the AVGN movie though.

It just shows that you can't simply watch a movie and have you and your friends talk about it and have it instantly be amazing. RLM do a lot behind the scenes to structure the discussion and a lot in editing to make the magic they do. I do think James would make a good guest though, but ONLY James. And only because he's also a certified movie buff and film maker so I think he could contribute to a discussion and not stick out. He is not as dominant as Mike though so he has a tough time leading things on his own show. But that works on BotW because any time we have someone try to loudly contribute it sucks. James wouldn't be like that.

For April Fools James, Nostalgia Critic and... 2 other people, I don't care, should all get together and do a BotW episode involving 3 of RLM's movies.

Just to see if we can get the internet to implode on itself.

(and yes, the RLM guys should then do a BotW of the movies the other guys have done)
 
No opinion on them feeling better than other channels on the basis of film-making alone (I think they consider almost all prominent film Youtube channels to be either pseuds, shills, or critical lightweights who shit out lite reviews aimed at randos who want to fart their way through a generic flick every week or two and only want the plot outline described to them - à la the gruesome twosome). I do find one thing extremely telling about the delusional ambitions of Youtube critics in making a feature film - they always choose the cop-out of comedy/satire/genre (usually a fermenting bucket of all three). I at least respect Ralphmoviemaker for trying to make dramas, because that genre exposes failure and mediocrity much more cruelly (Mythica is another, it sucks balls, but they tried very hard). Broad brushstroke 'it's a satire', 'it's an in-joke', 'don't take it so seriously', 'hah we weren't trying very hard, it's not a serious project' excursions by creators are abortions from concept, there's never been a successful one that I am aware of.

Space Cop *is* an unwatchable piece of shit, however that is par for the course with movies that only exist to service fans of the creator, who themselves are not known for making films. There's no problem with this in general, nobody expects anybody other than fans of the creators to watch Lazer Team, but I've seen people act as though Space Cop is something slightly more than that, something that has some merit outside of the need to be an existing fan of the creators and willing to endure a horribly produced film to enjoy the situations which would only appeal to people with the specific experience of the fandom it services. That is certainly what RLM wanted it to be - a fun film for the fans, but also a demonstration that they can make a half-okay cheapo film. They weren't dumb enough to think it'd become a so-bad-it's-good classic because they know you can't fake that, but they definitely had some ambitions of it being an alright no-budget genre comedy, but I don't think it ever passed the test of anybody who didn't know RLM not barfing the moment they saw how it was shot and scripted. The Space Cop character isn't funny unless you know who Rich is, and if the same level of production was packaged as anything else you might drunkenly stumble across on Amazon Prime, you'd not have much empathy for whatever nobodies made it, and would conclude that it was a waste of time by design. (I have no idea why I ended up just griefing Space Cop for no reason, but I'll roll with it.)

I wish I could remember which BotW episode it was where they were having a discussion about the films and the idea of "Space Cop" got voiced. I was watching some old episodes and stumbled across that moment again which was funnier now in retrospect as I think that was the moment it was birthed as a project.

Don't remember wich one it was either, but you gotta hand it to them, the basic idea behind Space Cop is hilarious, some jokes are funny, it's just not the right format... they could've just made a fake trailer for it with the better jokes in it instead.

EDIT: It's like "Be kind, rewind" with Jack Black, awesome idea, not that good of a movie.

If anything it seems like they despise YouTubers despite technically being ones themselves. Most notable is the Nerd Crew podcast but they've spoofed multiple types of YouTube videos (unboxing, top 10's, etc.) Not that anything is wrong with it because a lot of those things are ripe for parody and their stuff is usually funny, but it wouldn't be surprising to learn at least some of them feel they are better then other "content creators."

I actually think that's part of their appeal.
They try to (mostly) separate themselves from YouTube trends and drama and do their own thing.
It's refreshing.
 
I just wanted to say that the funniest moments for me are when Mike tries and fails to deliver a joke. It's like watching a hyena have an abortion.
 
Anyone else has Rich, Mike and Jay as the order they prefer the main 3? I find Rich is funniest, then Mike second since sometimes his jokes fell flat in my opinion and then Jay because despite having funny moments i more often disagree with him strongly (1 example among others is he really didn't like Joker and it seems he walked in wanting to hate it because of what other folks the director did and I personally think it was a fantastic film)

At this point they've had more success than many actual filmmakers, their videos have been seen by more people than the new Child's Play movie(not the remake the actual sequel with the Chucky Cult).

I'd say that RIM are a bunch of Filmakers+. I mean it's probably the greatest series about movie criticism since MST3K.

More or less they'll probably be pushed to make another movie and probably make it a serious attempt with no reliance on previously established material.

I have literally the exact opposite opinion. Jay is by far my favorite to listen to and when I first discovered RLM I was surprised how closely our takes on movies interlap (to the point some Kiwis have questioned whether or not I'm actually him IRL).

I can't remember the name of the place, but I used to go to this now-defunct pirate site to watch all the HD movies and TV shows for free, and there I happened to stumble across an HD upload of Space Cop of all things. This site allowed people to leave comments on each uploaded movie, so to my amusement, the page for Space Cop was filled with a dozen comments from angry normies who were bitter about having their time wasted by a shitty amateur film with just enough production value in the cover/poster art and the first 30 min to trick them into watching about an hour of Mike and Rich ironically dicking around on camera.

Judging by the type of normies who would willingly watch a movie titled "Space Cop" out of everything else available on a pirate site offering thousands of blockbuster titles, I'm guessing those were the same people who are genuinely entertained by the type of C-movies found in "Value-Pack" Walmart DVD bargain bins. And even they were disappointed by Space Cop...
 
I sincerely like Space Cop (and even more with the commentary) but it's exactly what I was expecting: Mike and Rich dicking around and dumb jokes.
