Maybe Rian was trying to replicate the shock from his Breaking Bad episode.
TLJ is frustrating to me because most of its story is the kind of shit I really would expect from George. Luke goes crazy from bad dreams. There's a big blue screen CGI casino planet and the characters have to flee from it on giant cartoon horses for thirty minutes. The villain is a non-character who dies. Yoda does stupid shit. The Jedi have books now. The main reason I still prefer it over any of the prequels is because I do still care about most of the characters and the dialogue isn't a constant barrage of wooden nonsense, and I feel most of the RLM guys share this opinion. I think the reason this movie really rubs so many people the wrong way is because it's the anti-EU/Prequelfag movie. It slaughters most of the fanboy sacred cows, which while I don't think that's a bad thing in of itself it was done inelegantly and needlessly most of the time.
Personally the ending to Rogue One was way more offensive to me than anything Johnson did. TLJ is a lot of things but blatant fanboy masturbation it certainly isn't. I know the cool kid opinion right now is TFA is also trash but I found it a competent return to form, and if JJ brings back that measured control for RoS then this new trilogy will end in a satisfying way for me. More so than the Prequels literally ending with "and now all the things you actually like are here again".
