He was definitely putting on an act. I think he was fine in that episode and I'm getting a little tired of hearing about his wife's death every single time he's mentioned. It's Pavlovian response at this point. It's been 9 years, let it go.
In a world without social media, Oswalt would rate with me as a somewhat amusing C-tier comedian who you just happen to recognize once in a while when he pops up as a cameo in a horror anthology show or as a voice you remember enjoying from a game you played a few decades back. A slightly more updated Dana Gould, if you will.

But we don't live in a world without social media.

He's a comedic actor. I think he was putting a lot of that on.
I mean, even with the setup "he can't talk about the ratatouille ripoff" joke he sucked the life out of it. Every other joke they threw at him he smothered almost as soon as he started talking. Sure, maybe he decided his gimmick that day was to be as unfunny as possible. And I don't care about personal stuff, I try to separate the art from the artist no matter how bad they are. But he was just blatantly unfunny to the point it almost felt on purpose. I'd take Max Landis over him, and I fucking hate Max Landis. I've seen him be funny in sitcoms and stuff, he can (or at least could) be funny. It felt like he didn't give a shit.

It's been a long rough few days, but hopefully this will be some levity.

Hahah, Rich said he just now saw Small Soldiers while Jay goes 'I was there in the theater cause I love Dante'. I'm not surprised Jay did that, but I'm a bit amazed Rich hadn't seen it before.

I had the biggest crush on Kellie Martin in Matinee. She never did a lot of movies after, but has done lots of TV.

Never seen The Burbs. Glad I finally have an answer for this sample. Sure wasn’t expecting a Tom Hanks comedy.

The Burbs is probably the only Dante movie I haven't seen, and nothing I've seen of it makes me want to either. Roger Ebert didn't like it much. I've seen bits and pieces, but it's weird how they rank it so high compared to a masterpiece like Innerspace.

I'm not a big fan of comedies with people screaming and yelling all the time. Innerspace has, like they said, right at the limits of being too wacky.

Yeah you guys should watch The Burbs, Rich and Jay aren't wrong, it's easily one of his better movies. Not as good as Gremlins 1/2 obviously, but a very easy watch.

I felt compelled to preserve this.

you guys don't like the burbs? that's crazy, one of the most rewatchable movies of all time along with groundhog day imo. Innerspace is okay I guess.

I've said it before, so I will say it again, I love these two hack frauds discussing movies in particular. It always feels so very cozy, just hearing two friends discussing movies they like. Small Soldiers was fucking awesome and I had no idea that it was a Joe Dante movie at the time.

Patton Oswald is literally just a "snarkier" wil wheaton with a less zesty skincare routine
Accurate and unfortunate.

Young'ns won't remember but Patton was once a good and unique comedian, rather "edgy" as we didn't say back then, vaguely associated with the people and phenomenon that would later come to be called the alt right. One day in 2008 he erased his whole prior internet presence, which was rather like that of somebody who'd post at KF nowadays, and reinvented himself as the tedious Reddit midget we all know today.

The "killed his wife" meme was forced by some old friends he disowned. (And also by him killing his wife.) I'm sure its persistence warms their hearts.

You know that's true, they really have some of the best RE:Views.

I love Gremlins, I'm glad they didn't try to pull a switcheroo on their lists and they recognize both movies as Joe Dante's best work.

I took a closer look at the thumbnail for their last video and noticed that Jay basically did the same thing as I did two posts above...

Here's a little trick you might not know: to get the highest resolution version of a Youtube thumbnail, replace @@@@ in the URL below with the video code: i.ytimg.com/vi/@@@@/maxresdefault.jpg

In this particular case:

AVGN alogs discuss Redlettermedia and in the process touch on the reason a lot of their newer reviews fall flat for me, many of the recent half in the bags have them reviewing everything around the movie but by the end of the review I don't even know what they actually thought of the movie.

An example of this is redlettermedia's Superman review which was incomprehensible imo, it felt like I would have needed to have spent several months reading every twitter conversation about Superman in order to understand what RLM was talking about and the recent plinkett star wars video may as well have been ai generated.

They should stop reviewing new movies or doing plinkett reviews altogether, just stick to best of the worst and re:view where they can either just roast the movies or rely on memories of when they used to actually have opinions on movies. The Joe Dante videos were good because they had a lot of stuff they actually wanted to say and clearly enjoyed talking about those movies. Meanwhile the last 38 episodes of half in the bag have been not good.
