To be fair I periodically vomit "I coulda done better than [INSERT CURRENTYEAR PRODUCT HERE]" plot concepts, even if only to safely vent personal autism in a controlled laboratory environment and I am far from alone in the multimedia forum for doing so.

The question is though, would anyone sit down to watch a 47 minute youtube video of me outlining my personal "Rings of Power but not a fucking trainwreck" plotline and narrative and discussing it with the amazon delivery man I kidnapped for the occasion?

Can you make it entertaining? Or insightful? Because... maybe.

The problem is that Mike isn't all that insightful. Jay rightly calls him out three minutes into the video when he asks "isn't it just Wes Craven's New Nightmare?" Mike also stomps all over anybody who suggests something Mike hasn't seen before in another movie. The original selling point of RLM was that these guys were professional filmmakers/editors and had some kind of insight into the movie making process. But more and more, it feels like Mike's knowledge and experience was frozen in 2016. He's increasingly out of touch with everything.

Nostalgia Critic fans usually delineate NC eras as pre- and post-Demo Reel. RLM fans have been ignoring the obvious for nearly a decade: Space Cop killed the channel and we're living in a post-Space Cop era of mediocrity.

It's a tired observation, but needs to be said again: if you're using your review platform as a launchpad for your own original films, you're muddying the waters. Especially if those films are garbage. You wouldn't take advice on crafting a five-star meal from Guy Fieri.

Why watch their reviews ripping on terrible B movies from the 80s? Cause I tried watching Elves to see if I'd have the same kind of fun they did and it did not go well.*

*Elves as a story is Phantom of the Opera, but with no music and it sucks. The creepy elf puppet falls in love with the young Aryan girl and Grizzy Adams is Raul who has to do the heroic protagonist action things because the young Aryan girl is so weak and useless.

while not the funniest of bad movies, i had fun watching elves while drinking beer with a few other guys. if i were to watch it by myself and sober, it probably wouldnt be fun; but in the context of a couple of drunk guys watching bad movies it is a decent one to include in the rotation.

That's probably the most important thing to remember. I have a movienight circle with some online friends (all in the same timezone, which is convenient) and we try to watch movies every Saturday and have done so for about 4 years. We've watched some absolute slop and effectively tortured ourselves with some really bad ones, but we almost always have great fun watching them, which is in spite of these kinds of films.

I would never recommend anyone watch garbage like Elves without having both the buddies to rip it to shreds with and the inclination/love for bad B or even C-tier movies.

Nobody goes to RLM to get the newest review of a new movie. They go to RLM to hear what the boys think of a movie, new or old. And to be entertained.

It's a luxury they've been able to earn by building a loyal audience.

I do think he had a point about the characters being flipped in Attack of the Clones. Especially the way George kind of set things up it would have been better to have Padme be the one seducing Anakin.

But as anyone who has done creative work, if you really want to succeed at it, you have to get to the point you throw out 100 ideas so you can pick out the good 1. Or pick out parts of 3 mediocre ideas that combine into something way better. Everybody likes to think they can just toss out the best idea on the first try but that kind of thinking gets you Melvin, brother of the Joker.

Here I am attempting to take Andor seriously, basking in its discourse—I cannot help but be haunted by the image of some cape-clad maniac cackling “UNLIMITED POWER!" There’s no escaping the lunacy once it’s lodged in your brain.

I do think he had a point about the characters being flipped in Attack of the Clones. Especially the way George kind of set things up it would have been better to have Padme be the one seducing

he also had a good point about qui-gon in phantom menace being a pointless character and obi-wan just sat around complaining. he was also correct that i think it would have been better for obi-wan to be on his own and anakin to be older (would also make the padme stuff less creepy) and obi-wan picks him up as an apprentice. would also tie into the original trilogy with luke being older and obi-wan picking him up as an apprentice.

overall he had good ideas how to fix the phantom menance, i dont get where people in this thread are saying he didnt have any good ideas of his own for the prequels.

Obi Wan as older and a protagonist whilst being taught by Yoda is a good suggestion and slots better with the prequel element of the prequels, it's just when it gets to him suggesting that the Clone Wars should've been about the Jedi fighting a bunch of Clones from a "Clone Planet" is a stupid idea, along with him suggesting that only Vader should have a red sabre because he's so super special. The Clone Wars involving more thematic opposites of two clone armies waging war because a government wanted to succeed from the Republic is just more interesting on a conceptual level to me. The Droids being so disposable because it signifies the Jedi at the height of their power and the Clones are something mass produced in secret with the end game plan to show people that the beaucracy of the Jedi is outdated and inefficient which leads to them giving Palpatine more power and all of it couldve worked with a better script in order to sell what that means and wouldve been a cool way to contrast the OT. but because the plinkett reviews focused so much on how these ideas dont work because they are rotten to the core and not good ideas needing polish. So then you get TFA and it's an evil empire with planet killing technology greater than the Empire's which just is there for some reason

hell even Qui Gonn could've worked as a character because the point of him and his death is that it singlehandedly casts a ripple effect which leads to Anakin's fall to the dark side and the fall of the Republic. That's why it's the Duel of the Fates, if Qui Gonn lived a more experienced Jedi Master could've molded Anakin into someone more stable, it's just that Qui Gonn in writing is a fucking moron

i agree completely, like the whole subtext of the scenes with them in AotC feels wrong. Padme is wearing pretty dresses, taking him on dinner dates and they dont try to play into that as a deliberate ploy by Padme to get him to cheat a little on his rules. It'd make sense for someone like Padme, to have disagreements with the shitty principles of the Jedi and for us to be on her side but to then go "oh shit we're rooting for him getting pussy that's gonna bring down the universe". like that's what great prequels do, they make us empathize or sympathize for actions which we know will put the characters in situations that will end poorly. better call saul does this excellently, whereas the PT and hobbit films do not
