I dunno. It requires a defense of the show itself and the show doesn't warrant that kind of defense and all it will do is stir up Youtube drama which they try to avoid.

EDIT: Hypothetically, if they did try to defend it, it'd be like the Plinkett TFA review where they shift the argument entirely to George Lucas fucked up already, so the Acolyte can't possibly be any worse. Which doesn't work because people really are re-evaluating the Prequels and those movies actually are better than most of Disney Wars.
 
Pre-rec was weird, I think it's just too far off-brand for RLM.
-They did a video about how Sonic was never good - a certified retard journo take.
-The first time I watched their stream live, I made some mild joke about Rich & diabeetus (or AIDS?) and instantly got banned from chat. It was weird.
-I think Mike is the heart of RLM and he didn't have anything to do with pre-rec because he doesn't care about games.
 
While a bait and switch would be on brand for them I can't think if any other scifi/fantasy show they could mention instead.

Assuming they are going to talk about the Acolyte my guess is their opinions will be summed up as yeah it's bad but what did you expect? And Star Wars has been dead for years so why get upset anymore?
 
The only other show I can think of that could qualify for courting controversy would be The Boys since it's also halfway through its latest season, although I wouldn't describe that as "sci-fi fantasy." It would at least be more interesting than to hear them regurgitate the same old standard "it's not as bad as the prequels" defense of Disney's garbage.

One example I remember rich saying something to the effect "At best, religion (I can't remember if it was religion generically or Christianity he was talking about) is a net neutral to humanity." If I had to guess this was during one of his many X-Com streams. Pretty standard Bush era fedora euphoria. He's a relic from a specific time period which I think just took people by surprise when they saw him unedited for the first time. It's also interesting because I remember him talking about his fiance being Christian and working with her church's charity functions. His position, I believe, was that if Christianity or religion never existed people like his fiance would still volunteer, but the negatives of religion would not exist that's why at best it's a net neutral, but probably net negative.

There were a few good streams. Typically,

-E3 streams where Rich would shit on every new game.
-Streams where other people drop by. When they had guests (good Colin from Canada, Jessie, Rich's wife, etc.) the guests had a tendency to make things more conversational. Guest streams were where you got the best Rich stories.
-Sierra game streams.

Jack solo streams were the worst.

There were a few Pre-Rec streams that Mike showed up, and I remember on one he was looking at the chat and said, "What does 'based" mean?" That was probably the funniest thing I remember seeing from those streams.
 
These comments from their Popeye video made me laugh more than I should.

Also, I felt the same way as Jay about this movie when I was a kid. I revisited it last year and appreciated more, maybe because I know who Altman is now, but it's still not great. I'm glad something weird like it exists though.
 
I think that Jay and Rich explained it well:

"It's an ambitious movie." It really is. There was definitely effort and artistry put into it, which makes it a pretty easy watch for me as an adult. There's a lot about it that I can still appreciate as I get older. It's an interesting movie to check out if you have no nostalgia for it, at the very least. If you're a movie nerd that is sick of seeing bad CGI everywhere these days, then this movie feels like a breath of fresh air.

Fun fact about the set pieces: They're still standing, to this day. Look up "The Popeye Village" if you're interested.

Also, the subplot about Swee Pea having clairvoyant abilities: It's actually a thing from the OG comics! Altman wanted to follow the comics more accurately, and the studio wanted him to follow the cartoons more (as well as make it into a musical lol). As a result, we can clearly see some rushed aspects to the plot.

Far more entertaining than I was expecting, especially considering my experience is identical to Jay's -- it's one of the earliest movies I ever saw and I have not revisited it since I was 4 or 5. My memories are a haze of confusion and boredom and wondering if Mork was really blond haired.

The most shocking RLM video of all time, however, for being one where Rich Evans knows the material inside and out. I was wondering if we were going to hear about Thimble Theatre, and there it was in the first 5 minutes of the video, along with all sorts of other Popeye trivia. Good info from an unexpected source.
 
Historical notes aside, both Rich and Jay are completely wrong about generational awareness and fandoms of each character they discussed; it's actually impressive how wrong they are. They are confusing their internalized impressions of reality with objective fact, and all it would take is a tiny bit of research to look at sideline/paperback sales in bookstores and comics shops. Stores don't stock items that don't sell, and across decades, regions of the United States, and subcultures, both Garfield and Popeye have remained bankable-enough to generate new books and licensed objects.
I feel like the professional welder David Letterman had on to review Flashdance, or the undertaker he had to review Creepshow, knowing only things that will ruin other people's enjoyment, but that was the point of those guests, and I guess that is my purpose here, much like Shelley Duvall's mission in life to play Olive Oyl.

It's weird how when they're wrong about something they tend to be spectacularly wrong. Remember when they mused over how Cynthia Rothrock never had a major career because of sexism? I seem to recall the action movie fan community ripping them a new asshole for that one.

Speaking of Letterman and Williams, for the life of me I can't find it but he went over this story about how Robert Evans had no idea how to finish the movie and he said 'Maybe Popeye can walk on water like Jesus' And showed Evans' reaction going 'ooohohhh hyeahhh' all wild, was great. Too bad it seems to be lost. Found this reference though.


With the final fight in shambles, everyone realized the movie didn’t have a workable ending. “I joked to Robert Evans, who was coked out of his tits, and I said, ‘Maybe I should walk on water,’” remembered Williams. “He said, ‘Yes!’”

It does show just how limited they are when it comes to movies as she was part of peak Hong Kong movie era.
