Just watched that Night Court video. Man...that show looks remarkably unfunny.

But at the same time, it is kind of refreshing to see a show that is just "boring and unfunny" bad instead of "relentlessly hateful, spiteful, and obnoxious" bad.

It's depressing that actual human beings write this off as "comedy." Say what you want about the Seltzerberg movies and how they are absolute reference movie garbage, but at least they do put in some chuckle-worthy moments here or there (emphasis on some, btw).

This sitcom, however, is pretty much a 22-minute embodiment of a YouTube cringe or try not to laugh compilation that it's beyond fascinating.

I will forever hate "Meet the Spartans". It is an absolutely terrible movie, but there was one joke that made me laugh.

"You're mom is so stupid, she thought Tupac Shakur was a Jewish Holiday!"

That line is so stupid that I laughed at it, and because it got that one laugh out of me, I can never forget the movie. It almost feels like they did that deliberately, lol.

If we're still talking about boomercore sitcoms, M*A*S*H, Sanford & Son and Good Times are excellent honestly.
I remember hating MASH as a kid. I won't say it's because it came on the same time as some of my shows, but then I'd be a liar.

Thankfully I grew up and started loving the show.

I'm personally waiting for the dark, gritty SJW reboot of Small Wonder

All I remember about that movie is Kevin Sorbo is in it and it ends with a musical number.

Exactly, the bar for comedy is that low right now.

Night Court was essentially built around Harry Anderson, who'd made an impression on TV before, from his guest appearances on Cheers to various shows like Letterman and SNL, and the first season was going for that sort of Barney Miller feel, only maybe slightly less grounded in the grimy criminal justice system of 1980s New York City. They started boosting the zany factor in later seasons.

This sequel seems like the sort of show that would be a show-within-a-show, like something a ridiculous actor character would be starring in that would be meant as a parody of pointless, useless sequels, reboots and revamps.

Really? The only people I knew who watched Sons of Anarchy were women - same with that Vikings show.

I loved Vikings up until one of the main leads left, and I'm a guy.

I didn't ever get the impression it was pitched at women, it was full of sex and violence but also amazing characters and performances. Lagathea and Ragnorak especially were brilliant. And Flocki, I loved Flocki.

Apologies for the Vikings sperg, getting back on topic when will RLM review the latest movie starring Melissa McCarthy?

A modern day SJW millennial mixed race/gender neutral reboot of WKRP in Cincinnati where they run a podcast known as WKRP. It has little to do with the original series and it's a try not to laugh challenge. Coming to Peacock in 2024 for only 8 episodes before it gets cancelled for being unfunny.

It's interesting going back and watching old Night Court now, because that's exactly what it's missing - the grit.

Even in the credits you see shots of regular NYers on the streets, and they are the people who would probably end up in the court. Now? The theme is half the length and you only see the court - all the grit is gone and everything is shiny.

There were tons of hookers on Night Court. Now? That'd be shaming sex workers. One old episode I watched recently (Roz and Christine hang out and go to a strip bar) had a TON of tranny jokes in it, which would never fly now because Twitter would scream for days to get everyone fired. Edit - oh yeah, not to mention it had Roz and Christine make a plan to go out mud wrestling at the end of the episode. Good luck getting *that* on a modern fucking show.

Dan was a sex crazed maniac - can't have that because it would be white male patriarchy abusing their power structure. Once in a while you see a glimmer of what made the old show work in the new one. Unfortunately like his old sitcom, one of the characters has to be an alcoholic (in this case Harry's daughter, although it gave her one of the only good parts of the show, and that was dramatic, not even comedy). But Dan Fielding isn't even close to the same character he was in the old show. They basically pulled a Picard on him.

A show like Night Court can never work today. You can't have the sassy black baliff be violent like Roz. She has to be cute and funny like Queen Latifah. The new guy in Mac's job? Can't have a male be competent or confident. He's a total cuck. Edit - and of course you can't fucking show smoking on TV, and everyone has to be young and beautiful, so any actress resembling those two old broads who were baliffs before Roz are out too.

A show like this that is supposed to be wacky needs big broad characters like Bull and the old Dan. The humour works because it's not only zany but often shocking. You'll never get it in modern televsion.

That's my sperg out about Night Court. TLDR - modern television ruined any chance of this reboot ever having a hope in hell of being good.
