Hard drives are in the $15/TB range nowadays. Anyone can use yt-dlp to archive videos and livestreams from nearly any source. Any form of digital media you want is saved and distributed through archive sites, torrents, and numerous other file sharing services. The only thing I'd say you can't take personal ownership of are live service games that haven't been cracked or reverse engineered by fans.I want to add that we'll never have something like VHS ever again. Wide spread personal ownership of non-modifiable content without explicit permission from the owners is antithetical to modern "you will own nothing" and media revisionism.
It's never been easier to own your own media, but there is so much of it being produced that I'm sure a greater percentage of it is being lost than back when all you had was cable TV and a few local channels. I also agree with you that the attitude is not as widespread anymore. Everyone used to tape Christmas specials to watch next year; hardly anyone is going to download their favorite Youtube video because they expect it to just always be there.
