I have no history with Star Trek, but holy shit I can't imagine how miserable being a Star Trek fan must be right now.
It's more just disappointing, not that they are bad shows although that's a factor, It's more just disappointing that there are people out there who will watch the nutrek and think that THAT is star trek. That Star trek is a stupid show that pretends to be smart and pretends it has a meaning with metaphors and allegories so shallow you'd be surprised if an ant drowned in it. That it like Rick and Morty le random and quirky. And I'm sure a lot of people don't care that they enjoy it, it's just sad to see them try to defend it as star trek when it clearly isn't. I've never seen anyone who has said the nutrek shows are good AND that the old shows are boring but if I ever do hear that genuinely it may ruin my day as it will confirm that we will never live in a Star trek like world.

Come to think of it I've never heard anyone say they like them more than the old shows so I think I'm safe for now

One of the space-hippies was played by Charles Napier, which struck me as funny because later through his career he played some characters who did not seem like they would be friendly to hippies, space-faring or otherwise. Like the head of the country band that threatens the Blues Brothers with "You're gonna look pretty funny tryin' to eat corn on the cob with no fuckin' teeth!"
Funnier still that he came back for an episode of DS9, where he specifically requested that he be given a military role to play because he didn't want to play a space hippie again. Or as he put it, “Look, I don’t want to wear that silly shirt again. If you can write a role where I’m a general of an army base…”

I guess this is getting off-topic, but what else is there to say? Picard sucks, nu-Trek sucks, I Absolutely Fucking Hate Myself is a pretty good show.

I think it's perfectly acceptable and possible to make an incredibly powerful and timeless piece on current politics (or using an analog to talk about current politics) but it has to be given weight and reverence.
The Divine Comedy kind of proves and disproves your point. There's a lot in there about the politics of the day but nowadays, after so many centuries where those names mean nothing to us now, it's either a minor curiosity or the parts people like are expressly those NOT related to "current politics" of its time.

Which is what I'm trying to say. If you want to write something about "Trump is bad/good!" well what is the story going to mean years later when Trump is forgotten? By definition something tied to current issues can't be timeless because no issue today will still be an issue tomorrow. (i.e. A story related to Ted Kennedy is a lot less relevant now that he's dead.) It is only timeless when you generalize it to something that remains relevant no matter the names or terms of the times.

My favorite example of this comes from Othello. At the time, the English were at war with Spain, and having a character named "Iago" show up -- Saint James, aka Sant Iago being the patron saint of Spain -- would be like having a guy named "Osama" appear in an action movie circa 2002 or so. Everyone in the audience knew this was a dastardly, easy to hate villain as soon as they heard his name. All but forgotten now, but since it was more of a throwaway gag (or a sop to Shakespeare's patrons) and not the focus of the play, we still have a timeless examination of obsession, envy, jealousy, and revenge.

It is possible to discuss (then) current-day politics and still have it resonate in the future because those (then) current-day politics refer to universal problems that continually crop up, like Classic Star Trek's defense of escalating US involvement in Vietnam in A Private Little War.
I'd argue the failure of Current Trek is related to sheer incompetence. They can't do character drama, because they're incompetent. They can't do science-fiction based drama, because they are incompetent. They can't do social commentary, because they are incompetent.
It's nothing to do with the message. Nazis made good movies. Communists made good movies. Capitalists have made good movies. Racists can make good movies. Egalitarians can make good movies. And they can all point at one another and say, "See that there? That's a good movie." Goebbles was supposedly furious at Gone With the Wind because it is a really good movie.
Kurtzman cannot make a good movie.

I for one have been having a blast watching Picard. I have to be absolutely twisted off bottom-shelf whiskey and have my bingo card ready though. Lots of fun to watch with friends.

Kind of reminds me of the voyager episode where they meet up with 20th century Sarah Silverman, but a horrible trash fire.

I hope no one remembers this show in a year

I will remember Mike and Rich talking about it.

Star Trek was a show that varied from brilliant to wildly stupid, because it had heart and imagination, and it was written by people who were serious about making a good show. Nutrek is a stupid show that thinks Star Trek is stupid and that you're too stupid to notice just how stupid it thinks you are. It's not just that they get the science wrong or fuck up the canon - every Star Trek does that. It's that everything about it is so very, very aggressively stupid and lazy.

>Rich in a skintight Seven of Nine outfit
I can only get so erect.
All filmed in slow motion ala Baywatch.

Mike: "Jay make sure you capture every jiggle on camera"

Jay: "I should have majored in business"

I will remember Mike and Rich talking about it.
That wasn't Rich and Mike talking about Picard season 1. That was watching two men slowly dying on camera before our eyes.

Something I've been thinking about is that the evil fascist government based out of the Walt Disney concert hall is named the Confederacy. A Confederate government is one that has a weak central government and the member states have equal or greater power to the federal government. If anything the dystopian future should resemble Mad Max where galactic society has collapsed or one where the Klingons, Romulans, Borg, and the Dominion dominate the galaxy due to the weakened Federation. They picked a word they think means someone is bad and evil without bothering to do the research and hoping their audience is as stupid and simple minded as they are.

On RLM, I wish they had the balls to go a little deeper into why the politics of nuStar Trek is retarded, not just go "they use to talk about both sides and not be so dark". The "vaccine chip" sounds like straight up predictive programming and the whole fascist/confederation thing is so retarded I could post an essay on it here. I hoped they would go into why calling a "fascist" government a "confederacy" makes no sense, but I'm guessing they don't know how political system work or they also are such liberals they think "confederacy? That's like all about slaaaaavery and raaaacism!!!!!" If anything, a confederacy might be more inline with Star Fleet's values as it gives more independence to the planets that join, but that's me using my fucking brain. It's funny that these 90s liberals don't really like DS9 all that much for being the "root" of the issues of ST, but DS9 at least tried to be challenging and not just "Star Fleet good and saves the day no matter what!"

This is the most libTARD thing I've ever seen. I would never be friends with the kind of NPC that likes to watch this shit. Even the leftie Jewish shit in all the other shows is nothing compared to this. The LA Jew truly lives in another fucking universe than the rest of us. At this point Star Trek needs to be forgotten or given a hard reboot.

Can everyone put down their rose colored glasses for old ST? It's fucking pathetic seeing people act like ST was not super left-wing before now. The only real difference is that they didn't have people that were "wrong" act like super-nazis. Pick any episode that tried some "both view points" bullshit and it's clear who's really right and wrong, with DS9 maybe being the only exception, but DS9 was also full of pozzed and Jewish shit. Give ST to me and I'd have it be set after DS9 and have the Federation become unstable and factions begin to form, some want to go back to being independent others want their own federation/confederacy. The lesson would be "believe it or not, forcing completely different cultures/races together mostly never works." In other words, diversity is not a strength.

In order to retain viewers they have to pretend not to know the politics behind all the stupid shows they review. If they acknowledged it they'd have to talk about it, which risks losing viewers. They seem to be financially retarded (How do they not have good merch? Lots of talented people watch their channel. They have a comic book artist friend. How can they not get some shirts going? Maybe do a partnership deal for some vinyl figures of Mike+Jay+Rich+Mr. Plinkett. Partner with a brewery for a "Half in the Bag" beer! Use your nerd audience for something other than ad views, idiots!) so they have to keep the viewer numbers high at all costs.

This. Remember the Ozone Layer panic, before the global warming panic, and before the climate change panic?

Star Trek has always pushed retarded environmentalism, gay peace stuff, "diversity is our strength", and LGBT/race mixing shit. Plus a shitload of "allegories" for muh Holocaust, "white" racism, "fascism bad", and had a good number of episodes that ham-fist Nazis in them. The funny thing is, a lot of the old "anti-racist" stuff from classic ST would be called racist today by lefties.

I always liked Star Trek despite itself. There were a lot of good characters, episodes, and ideas that had nothing to do with all that pozzed shit. But now all that's left are the drug-filled ideas of LA Jews that hate anyone that ever voted Republican and think that everyone that doesn't want America to turn into a brown shithole is ready to start hunting down non-Whites and gassing kikes.

I mean, Mike literally pointed out that that nuTrek was badly saterizing/vilifying a Trump rally in episode 2. It’s not like they’re completely ignoring it.

They'll point and laugh but never highlight comments from showrunners/writers that they made the Klingons Trump supports and that all the (((social commentary))) is because of all the "far right terror" going on for like the last 10 years. I wouldn't hate it that much if they didn't do this retarded "why are doing this to Star Trek" shit but blatantly ignore that Star Trek is in the hands of batshit crazy/retarded leftists. Also, acting like old ST was amazing at showing "both sides" of an issue is kind of gay.

To be fair they are boomers and I think Jay is probably left leaning. On top of that if you really dived into it I think their channel might go poof from our friends at Google.

I don’t need everything I enjoy watching to talk or bitch about politics. I don’t care about their political leanings, I just want to watch the fun drunk tired men mock the bad Star Trek/Wars.
