I've got to admit the Bruce Willis Controversy and things adjacent to it bother me a lot because I can't really come to a decision one way or another.
There's two films in particular, Tod Browning's Freaks (1932) and this weird Brazilian superhero thing I can't remember that used actors who were apparently seriously mentally disabled. I really don't believe they understood they were "acting;" it looked like they were being shot the same way you get film of a tiger or infant; roll film and try to splice it all together. At the same time they didn't seem to be unhappy or uncomfortable; they were laughing and smiling and apparently having a fine old time.
I mean, of all the hideous fates I can imagine, "Make two million for my heirs for a week's work" is pretty low on the totem pole. Still, it bugs me and I don't exactly know why.
