After hearing from them and Critical Drinker that it's actually pretty solid and not too heavy on the SJW shit I might give Prey a shot. I'd like to see at least one more good Predator movie before I give up on the franchise.

Beardfat (aka Josh "The Wizard" Davis) told his mommy that he's gonna beat up Scott Walker (the Republican former governor of Wisconsin) because he took away the state's superior future(???):

Could any Americans explain to the rest of us what the Milwaukie utopia would look like if it weren't for Rick Scott?
How delusional is Josh that he thinks he'd ever be in an area where he'd be close enough to see a politician, be capable of throwing a punch that could do any sort of damage and also survive the physical toll on his soft, flabby body of throwing said punch?

I’m actually kinda impressed with the review. They point out the overaction to the feminist stuff while also saying that the film does do it a bit too much as well.
I was surprisingly disappointed in the review. I usually have pretty much the same opinion as the RLM guys. Sometimes I disagree but can respect their opinion but a lot of the review seemed to be "People are acting like the movie does X...okay, well it does but its fine."

Feel like I'm crazy over the Prey thing since usually SJW, woke shit doesn't bother me as much as people like Critical Drinker or Mauler but both of them liked Prey too and for me it was unbearably woke and the main character was one of the biggest Mary Sues I've seen in awhile.

Feels like a lot of people including RLM are doing the "Well, it's better than The Predator" thing which is a super low bar lol

It's the streaming effect. We've seen this from RLM for a while now and others are starting to do the same thing. If there isn't as much of an investment, a movie being derivative or just "okay" is seen in a more positive light and worth watching. Especially if said critic is under the assumption that you have a subscription to Hulu anyways.

Like, I don't, so I have no interest in Prey. I'd probably give it a watch if I did have Hulu even if it's just an "okay" Predator rehash, but as it is I'd much rather spend the 5 bucks just renting Predator.

Prey was pretty okay. The inconsistency regarding the Predator being able to cloak itself perfectly despite being wounded and the constant clicking sound in the first half were annoying. It does the whole "women should know their place" in the beginning but shuts up after they come to blows over it in the film. Of course we had to have evil (white) French fur trappers skinning the Buffalo. I was confusing the main actress with the one from Alita Battle Angel, but I can see the Aubrey comparisons ever since she started doing movies like the Child's Play remake or that one Jason Statham film she is in. The funny thing is that this movie does what is typical of first generation/people of a certain background films... they pepper in a few words or phrases of their native language, but never stick to speaking it entirely. But the movie has a optional Comanche dub which is interesting.

Jay is hit or miss with his reviews. I hated the Suspiria remake but Jay creamed his jeans over it. He reminds me of a John Waters quote: “If you go home with somebody, and they don't have books, don't fuck 'em!” But in his case it'd be something dumb, such as your blu-ray collection or Letterboxd reviews.

I just gave up on streaming services altogether (except for Amazon Prime, but that has more to do with delivery services) and went back to digital antenna, blu-ray, or Youtube videos. If I want boomer shows, I can get that for free or recognize that it's exceptional and buy physical media.

Your local library is also a great resource to check out mainstream and boomer stuff.

You should. Don't set you expectations too high.

Yeah, same, they gave it a very fair shake and it was funny, it's rare for me to agree with them as much as I did.

The Prey review was one of their weaker ones it felt like, but I also understood the points they were making which was fine, I just think they were walking on eggshells too much. The one thing I disagree with Mike on his him wanting the brother to be a dipshit, as I'd rather see his idea where she uses her wit instead of being an action hero, but instead of her brother being a dipshit he works alongside her and both of them contribute instead of one or the other doing all the work. I haven't seen the movie nor do I intend to though, I'm just indifferent to it.

Here's Rich being funny though

The Re:View was a 40 minute whine about fanboys that completely missed what was so grating about the main character.
The fact that she literally gets her brother and all of her tribes best warriors killed because she needed to 'Girl Boss!'
Seriously, the Predator left them alone until she went out of her way to literally and figuratively 'poke the bear' and as a result everybody dies for her stubborn selfish pride, just because she couldn't 'leave it alone' like she was very reasonably asked to.
Add to that the fact that the writers forgot to include even the shortest scene of her grief at the death of her tribe members or brother and instead cut to her walking triumphantly back into their camp. This makes it look like she not only got everybody killed but she that doesn't give a shit as she's shouting 'Girl Boss!' in the face of their probable parents, widows and children.

This seems to a persistent problem with modern writers and their 'Girl Boss!' characters, the fact that their character must always be presented as heroically right, even as they do stupid and occasionally downright evil shit you're still expected to clap. It's the 'Holdo problem' from The Last Jedi, a character who is written as 'righteous and empowered' but acts like a retard and as a result they can only ever come off looking like an insufferable cunt. Because they're both righteous and fucking wrong.
Ripley in Alien is often a cool, stand-offish character considered aloof by the rest of the crew. She doesn't mind treading on toes when she knows she's right and she's prepared to be unlikable. But, that only works for the character if she's fucking right. Imagine the scene at the airlock where Ripley is trying to assert her command authority and stick to protocol, but instead she shouts 'Girl Boss!' ," I'm in charge here and I say we open the door and let Dallas and Kane in", and that's sold as empowering rather then hubristic and stupid. You respect Ripley because she was right and they should have listened to her, not because she shouted down the boys.
The real problem with the characterization in Prey is that their lead is unlikable because she's selfish, petulant and wrong and her far more interesting and complex brother would have made a much better focus for the film as the lead.

It was a strawman of Mike to say that critics of Prey wanted macho man Predator which means they want The Predator, which everyone agreed sucks.

Predators is overlooked and underrated, it should have been brought up more in their Re:View of Predator.

The only one the Predator leaves alone is her. For plot armor reasons. The Predator in Prey literally kills anything and everything. Snakes, bears, Frenchmen, redskins, and so on. It was killing everything for fun and trophies and testing itself. The female lead would have seen her tribe killed by the Predator no matter what. It was there to kill everything except for characters with plot armor. The Predator in the first film literally kills the first CIA team and then spends more time hunting in the same area of the jungle until the second CIA team comes in. The Predator in Prey would have tracked down the tribe and killed them all. By the female lead killing the Predator she saves probably every redskin and Frenchmen for 100 square miles.

Did we see Dutch grieve for his team? Ripley grieve for anyone? In Aliens she only grieves for her daughter and basically just mentions her crew in the most sterile forensic way. Pretty much every film in AvP ends with the monsters dead and the remaining people standing there looking at the camera five seconds later with no time for reactions or anything. So Prey is not unique. They are so mentally traumatized by dealing with these monsters that they just walk away all shellshocked. You can just write the ending off as her having PTSD and not knowing how to react.

Yeah, I think that's probably true especially for a lot of Marvel's Phase 4 stuff and Star Wars' recent shows. People feel like they are getting it for free because they pay a single lump sum once a year to Disney so nearly forget its being paid for.

After watching Prey I went back and watched the other Predator movies (except The Predator because...well, it's awful). Predators is really underrated. It's good fun, the characters are memorable, the IDF chick is a much better "strong female" then Prey's lead. The main character isn't a huge buff muscle god and the final fight with the predator is the man and woman teaming up and outsmarting the predator in an interesting way including using Royce's "bad" nature which the Predator didn't expect by literally using one of his own team as a suicide bomber to try and kill the predator.

Prey was probably sitting at like a 4 out of 10 for me until the final fight. It was below average, I have already forgotten every character (which is an important element of a story for me), the long stretches of her walking around the woods by herself were boring to me as opposed to building tension (because she is super woman and the only character so I never felt she was going to die or be in trouble) and a lot of the politics stuff was annoying (She's not only the best hunter, the best tracker, the best hand to hand fighter, reinvents the axe to make it a sniper rifle, the best at making healing potions, the best at training dogs, etc.).

It dropped to a 3/10 for me for the final fight then because where Dutch is being thrown around the place by the predator and finally overcomes it or Royce had to have a predator help him then trap it with a pile of explosives, then use his brains to surround the place with fire so it's thermals didn't work, then get help from the IDF woman to finally beat it... instead Naru just kicked the shit out of it by herself with no issues at all. She out thinks it, out muscles it at times, uses its technology better than it did, etc.

Love RLM a lot, usually really enjoy their points but this video was just kind of weird. It's like they looked past basically everything they would usually criticise to praise the movie. Hell, they even would bring up issues they usually have with these movies, admit that this movie HAS those issues but then just say it didn't matter in this case. Them picking the most retarded anti-Prey takes to mock in the video just seem kind of awkward when they're basically shitting on reviews by children who can barely construct a sentence but even that led to a weird scene where Mike reads that one guy's review and then awkwardly is like "Well... he... he actually has some valid points in this.... but.... you know."
