I think I figured out the problem. I'm 99% sure legendary fish don't start to bite your bait until you start the "A Fisher of Fish" quest. The sockeye salmon didn't bite my bait once beforehand. I come back after activating the quest, though, and it bites every time I toss it into the water... granted, he snaps the line about a dozen or so seconds in every time, but that's besides the point.

It makes sense since there's nowhere else to take the legendary fish after you catch them except for the guy who gives you the quest. That being said, it'd be nice if the game told me this instead forcing me to figure it out on my own.
Gotta tire them out, no reeling while they're angry, etc, push on the R stick either left or right periodically to prevent them taking line, but be careful since that can put tension on the line, when tired out pull down on the left stick and reel, let go of it so the pole can descend on its own and repeat until angry again. That's how I caught mine.

It's pretty typical Rockstar stuff. They enjoy making fun of both sides, which I hope they continue to do for a very long time, anyone complaining about SJWism or celebrating it are fucking morons as far as I've seen.

Pretty much this. In that way Rockstar reminds me of South Park creators : they poke fun at everyone and while they tend to have a core message of fairness and equal treatment for people, they strive to be funny / entertaining first and foremost and aren't afraid of being politically incorrect or irreverent if need be to achieve that.

As far as RDR2 goes for myself :
Hoo boy

There are VERY few games I'd rate as high as I'd rate Red Dead Redemption 2 after my first playthrough. Literal 11/10 for me. Just about everything about the characters, the story, the character / gun / gameplay / setting customization the gunplay, pacing, THE GAME WORLD / ATMOSPHERE and the massive depth in everything from survival mechanics to how the game world and interactions with people go just screams "perfection" for me.

There are some frustrations or things I'd like to have been improved on. Some of my mild gripes are just stuff where it'd be nice to have but I understand why they didn't : Mostly I'm kind of miffed that there aren't repeatable bounty missions but at the same time each of the existing bounty missions has unique dialogue to them and the game overall has a massive amount of content so maybe they figured they'd make each and every bounty memorable and interesting that way.

Then there are things that I found genuinely irritating for the sake of gameplay. One of the annoying tendencies of the game was your weapons being swapped out for no reason when you entered a mission or did anything. I understand when the game wants you to use specific guns for specific sequences when it comes with a reason (i.e you enter the area unarmed and you need to use stuff you pick up or need a sniper rifle to cover someone) but in a lot of missions there wasn't a lick of sense why my sniper rifle gets suddenly replaced by an unupgraded Carbine Repeater and the shotgun on my back unequips. Then the game locks me out of using my horse to retrieve the guns from it even though it's right there????? It's so inconsistent and thoroughly annoying when customizing, storing and taking care of your firearms is such an integral part of the game.

Another, although more understandable annoyance has to do with the movement of your character and how he's slowed down at camps and certain segments in missions which is understandable probably so that you can't just run over your friends with the horse or knock them down etc but it sometimes makes walking in safe camps ultra irritating when I'm just mashing X furiously trying to try and walk a tiny bit faster but it's a smaller frustration than the game being inconsistent on your equipped weapons is.

I want to give a HUGE shoutout to the gunplay. The guns feel incredibly satisfying to use. Pulling the trigger again to re-cock single action revolvers or operate the lever on the lever-actions is a nice touch of added authenticity, the guns look and feel great (and there's a lot of appropriate-looking customization) to use, the weapon sounds are satisfying. And the gore... The gore and ragdolls are really good. The entry / exit wounds and blood effects from weapons look brutal but not excessive and putting a bullet in someone's skull shows a decal and looks like some deformation as well i.e it looks like the bullet takes bits of the poor feller's skull off. Shotguns de-limb people and they fall to the ground screaming after their body parts were cut off and often accompanied by a very satisfying kill cam (I kinda wish you could turn off the gray effect on the kill cams but oh well) that even changes depending on your honor situation.

The game world also deserves a big shoutout, while the promises of "in-depth world simulation" were in my opinion a bit exaggerated by previews, the reality of what IS there is still massively immersion-enhancing with almost every settlement having tons of different atmospheric events and there is a lot of room for stuff that happens as a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing, you can end up in bar brawls or shootouts and the reaction from the environment to your (and sometimes other NPCs') actions is really on point and makes you forget you're playing a videogame at times. The massive amount of dialogue and being able to greet / antagonize people will often create really funny situations or lead into conflict when someone gets butthurt about you antagonizing them. NPCs will also reference stuff you did in the town which further makes you aware of the impact you're having on the game world and the people living in it. The larger towns have hangings taking place at the local gallows sometimes from bounties you take in or other NPCs. I remember taking someone in, then checking into the sheriff's office a few days later and the person was still physically in the jail cell. Then a few days from that I walked by and they were holding a public hanging for her. Stuff like that makes the towns feel very much alive and it feels like every corner of the world has something going on that is keeping you on your toes in case something happens. Because there are a TON of encounters you can find in the game that feel like an integral part of the game world instead of being carefully masked scripted sequences.

The bounty system for the player is also pretty awesome. For those who don't know, if you commit crimes in the open world, you don't generally just get a magic "wanted" meter like you did in the GTA games for example. In RDR2 if you commit a crime, usually it needs a witness to see it and they'll run off to tell the po-po. You can intercept and intimidate people into silence (or just kill them lmao) and even if a crime gets reported it doesn't mean you get chased down by completely psychic bounty hunters. The lawmen come to investigate the area and you might bump into them but they don't automatically know it's you and even if you cock up if you're in open country you generally can just leave the area and avoid the bounty hunters / deputies. In cities / towns though good luck : you'll very likely get boxed in and filled with lead from all sides but at the same time I think it makes for a nice balance since towns / cities have a lot of soft targets for robbies with big potential payoff but the risks are also far greater than robbing folks / trains in the backwoods.

I could gush about the game forever and ever (and probably will) but those are my initial first impressions of RDR2 after my first complete playthrough. I will be doing many, many more playthroughs as this is one of those games I'm just gonna play forever and ever so I'll probably update my impressions at some time as I go along.

i like how you say RDR2 is an "11/10" while 2-3 paragraphs in your post consist entirely of complaints:cunningpepe:

Pissed off that the standard Xbox one only runs at 856p, I'm very seriously considering buying a PS4 slim so I can actually play a current gen game full 1080p!

More complaining about things that no-one else cares about:

The punishment for dying in this game is ridiculous... if you hunt a lot. If you don't hunt you'll just lose some money. For those who do hunt (particularly those who like to stock up on pelts before taking them to the trapper), however, death is a pain in the dick. You lose every single pelt you have on the back of your horse when you die. It wouldn't be such a big deal if you lost one or two pelts, but that doesn't matter. Whether you have one or a hundred, it all disappears when you die. The only exception to this being the smaller pelts that you keep on your person.

This bullshit has put me into the habit of immediately shutting down the game the moment I die so it doesn't have time to autosave. Losing all of your hard-earned pelts because you accidentally fell off of a cliff is fucking stupid.

On a positive note... memes

There's always room for mechanic and gameplay improvement and stuff that would've/could've/should've/shouldn'tve been in the game but the weapons switching around randomly is by far my biggest gripe and I'm willing to put that down to it being a glitch / undocumented feature that they might iron out in future patches.

I'm rating it so highly because the game world, the setting, the story&quests&characters / gunplay / atmosphere / music and how it all bundles together, just the respect and care with which Rockstar handled the production of the game not only as a love letter to fans of Red Dead Redemption 1 but also the Wild West genre in general. That's not to say I won't criticize the game for the flaws I perceive in it but the execution of the actual content of the game is just mindblowing how perfectly it satisfied each and every one of my wild west fantasies.

I'm still at the "honeymoon" phase with this game so who knows, maybe I'll have a different opinion of it after a year or two have passed but I honestly think this is it, Rockstar has created something pretty much a game that not only matched my insanely high expectations but exceeded them beautifully.

I'm enjoying the game thoroughly, taking my time through the content rather than speedracing to the end. It's very impressive for both what it is and what it offers, and improves upon a game I already thought was of an impressively high standard (i,e: RDR1).

I'm still early in Chapter 3, I like to take my sweet time with big games. So Dutch wants me to not cause trouble in Rhodes. This might be a good time to confess I fucked up big time a few in-game days before our move to the peninsula. I just wanted to scare a n----- in the parlour but fucked up and shot him down.

Knowing the games advanced AI, I was worried they would ban me from playing Blackjack, which I already established I love playing.

RDR Online starts tomorrow for Ultimate Edition, apparently. Open Beta, doesn't seem a limited run, they have no interest in erasing progress, either.

If it's anything like GTA Online was at launch, I can wait a month or two.

So I just got this game not too long ago and I'm having a blast. I haven't had this much fun on a console game in years. And I can say, as someone that helped raise horses, these are the best I've seen in a game.

RDRO has a full on character creator. Nothing like East Asian MMOs, but not terrible, either. A lot of the head choices suffer from bugeye, though, few are able to be fixed from what I've noticed. Also seems to have a story mode, too, instead of just random missions. Honor system, weight system, no idea on hair growth, but I doubt it.

Pretty ambitious I gotta say.

EDIT: Dead Eye seems to activate special abilities rather than slow time. You get Eagle Eye as well plus it doesn't slow down, either. Seems random where you start out, random what clothes you get to start with, too. Special Currency seems to be gold bars, not sure yet what they're used for... but if it's character redesign tokens, I'd be okay with that.

You can unlock abilities - Dead Eye or Passive - through coupons, they level with experience I think. You also always have a Scrawny Nag should anything happen to your actual horse. All in all it's pretty neat so far.

Horses did too much stupid shit for me to truly like them. There have been multiple moments where my horses will take control away from me so they can dodge a tree, only to run into the tree right next to that one. Also, horses will usually automatically jump over waist high objects, though sometimes they'll just trip over them and eat shit.

but male horses have modeled genitalia and their balls shrivel up in the cold areas... oh, and horses randomly shit in the middle of towns

so... i guess it evens out

Found out Gold Bars are a shortcut of sorts through having to go through Rank or to purchase when you don't have enough in game money. No idea how to acquire them. Don't think dual wielding is a thing, either. Taking good care of your horse provides Honor, though. Some things seem bugged. Might recreate character, dunno.

I also was welcomed in Leymoyne by Tyrone and his butt buddy Enrique as I was out picking yarrow, who then decided to hog tie me and shoot me in the face. 10/10 true Wild West experience.

EDIT: It's pretty barebones, like Early Access barebones right now. It's practically impossible to earn money and the prices are utterly ridiculous. Also seems Gold Bars are mandatory for some customization and those can take 20 hours to grind for one fucking bar where some materials cost 85 bars.

No gambling, yet, it could work if Rockstar manages to properly separate the Gold Bars from in game currency. So, no fun camaraderie at the poker table or blackjack table.

Seems only ten story missions and apparently it's like SWTOR where if you wanna do good guy things the other douchebags can beat you to the decision. Or vice versa. No idea if they plan to fix that.

Nothing but griefing in most servers as there is currently no repercussions for ganking just yet, no real wanted system or bounty system. Good suggestion on the Reddit for how to have your cake and eat it too, though. Might copy and paste it until Rockstar listens.

Barely any NPCs in cities or towns, though. Like practically ghost towns. I wonder if that's to offset the animals in the world...

We live in a beta, arthur

Bottom plan

I hop they fix how money works when its out of Beta. Right now everything costs a ton, and you make like 2 dollars a mission. Also gold bars are shit.
